Back 3 next season (CB's)

With Sage seeming imminent (plays a back 3) Crystal Palace set to confirm Pierre Sage as new manager who is likely going to be the back 3 for next season?

I think Lacroix and Canvot are locked in. The 3rd centre back will be between Riad and Richards. Riad looks like he could be starter for Morocco this World Cup. Played in a friendly yesterday VS Norway partnering Issa Diop. I think if Riad has a decent World Cup and keeps fit next season he could play a lot of games. Palace are in the Europa League as well so there will be rotation.

Richards Lacroix canvot the starting 3 for me,

If we are facing another potential 60 game season (including injuries / suspensions) then you would think we would need another warm body to have 5 first team ready players for those 3 positions -

Maybe we see Lerma as that warm body that can slot into the back 3 as emergency cover.

Same as last season, but with lots of rotation.

Would like us to sign another youngster too.

The good news is that with Canvot and Riad both showing they have the quality, if still lacking experience*, so that we don't need to spend big money on a new starter. But no point getting the other youngster in if the new manager won't give them some game time - 10-15 games - to develop them

I can see Lacroix wanting a move next year and I think he'll have two years left so good to get ahead of that recruitment issue

* though the experience of winning a European final is pretty damn good

If we continue to play 3 at the back next season I’d like us to bring in an experienced centre half who can organise well. For all the promise or Canvot and Riad our defence was a weak link in the second half of last season. We conceded soft goals, were poor in the air and vulnerable to set pieces. A whole season of that and we would be in trouble

I think a lot of that weakness was those in front of the back 3 losing the ball and putting them under more pressure. Pino, Larsen and Johnson being the culprits. Plus the midfield 2 weren’t always the strongest when Wharton and Kamada weren’t playing. Lots more pressure on defence when those in front of them aren’t holding up the ball so good?

I think Pino loses the ball because he is prepared to take a risk and find a forward ball. From what I’ve seen this is what happens in the Spanish League. It’s not like the prem where Arsenal (for example) can boast 70 odd percent possession and the ball never once goes in the opponent’s half !

If its Sage, he has used a lot of youth this season just gone.

Probably because PL has bigger squads. Imagine it even ours. Theirs is probably 15 senion players.

We have internationsals on the bench each game. Ok it's Sosa, Benitez, Devenney and the such but it still is. Maybe a french 18 year old is better then those who knows.

Well we know a French 19 year old is

Canvot

It will stay the same. Chris, Max, and JD are the three. Chadi will be a rotation option and get more games than he has so far, fitness permitting.

Lerma is probably leaving and there is more than enough game time for two rotation options at the back. So as well as Chadi, it could be that a youngster will be used at times, or that we bring in another backup option if Sage/New Guy sees fit.

I would anticipate this too.

The option in Lerma's contract has been exercised and he is being retained - see list on club site
