Can’t get on board with the names of the 2 lesser European cups. Heard people, including Palace fans calling it the ‘two Bob cup’ etc.
I’m going old school and will now be referring to it in its old name.
Can someone let me know if we are in the eufa cup final or cup winners cup final please.

Many thanks.

I am 100% no authority, but I think that as the Europa Conference thingy is the third level of European competition & has only recently been established, I don't think our game on Wednesday has a previously named equivalent -

The Conference League is a relatively new tournament.
The tournaments used to go in order, The European Cup, now champions league which is a pisstake in itself.
UEFA Cup was second now called Europa League.
Then came the Cup Winners Cup played in by teams who had won the previous seasons FA Cup in various countries.

It's utter woke nonsense, teams that have done jack sh*t all season and finished only 14 points off relegation still get to play in Europe. They'll be letting the Welsh, or women in next.

Apparently, if results had gone differently yesterday Bournemouth would have qualified for the champions league. By finishing sixth.

What the f*** they would actually have been champions of is unclear to me. It sums up European competition, though.

I hope we win on Wednesday if only to get the crack at the Europa League we were unfairly denied, but even if we do, the conference league is s***. Anyone who is any good at all is already in one of the other competitions because half of Europe qualifies now, so the very bottom of the lowest barrel has been scrapped to find the conference teams. It shows in most of the games.

European competition used to be the pinnacle, now it's often a step down for premier league teams.

Nice one Syd.
was unsure as we won the cup but then got demoted to this.

Nice one. I’m off to the cup winners cup final tomorrow morning 🔴🔵

Absolutely. It's the chance to participate in the competition that we should have been in via qualification. The mass of other clubs qualifying all over the place devalues the concept in my view. Champions league and cup winners, tick. Maybe down to 4th for another competion, say, Conf. League, tick. Everything else, superfluous.

In the Scottish league you can be 1pt off the relegation group in the league and still qualify for Europe. It's absolute nonsense. Said it before but the system should be:

Champions League - the League Champion from each country
Europa League - FA Cup Winner (or international equivalent) and/or second in the league
Europa Conference - League Cup winner (or international equivalent)

End of. Four teams at most per country, mainly comprised of teams that actually won something. But of course then they couldn't generate tonnes of TV money from hundreds of mickey mouse fixtures.

I think many supporters, and players, of clubs at our level would soon tire of that approach. Every season the only target would be to avoid relegation

All sounds good to me.

The other thing absolutely killing European competitions is this ridiculous league table system. Your know, the one that's very similar to the one everyone objected to. Only worse, because it's not even a proper league table in the sense of there being any great significance to what position you occupy or finish in. So long as you make the cut in the end, none of that matters. You can lose five bloody games and still qualify. Literally.

The old group phase in Europe was bad enough, but now there is no jeopardy at all until well into the new year. Just games with nothing on them at all.

Correct. What is it? 24 out of 32 teams are technically still in the competition after a 6 game merry go round?

And then you get people talking about players getting injured left right and centre. Well of course they do, with the number of fixtures teams are playing now if they are in Europe.

Champions League should just be the champions of their respective leagues. The Europa League should be the cup winners of the countries involved (FA Cup and League cup) and if those have been won by a club in the Champions League, it should go to the runners up or the top team in the league to not have qualified.

Europa Conference League should be done away with or should have maybe the top 3 clubs from each country who haven't qualified for any other European club if it must exist

But how would average players get the £250k per week they deserve to be paid without these European Super Leagues ?

Not far removed from mine or a couple of suggestions so far, so I am able to agree with you.

We know that TV and sponsorship controls football though and any system that reduces the number of fixtures (and therefore revenue) just won't ever happen. It'll probably just get worse. Anyway, I am just off to watch Leyton Orient vs St Mirren in the Champions League B Group Preliminary Round.
