Personally, I believe that whilst they breached the regulations on more than one occasion, their removal from the play-offs was the wrong decision.
Examining the consequences, their supporters have already made travel arrangements, they might have booked accommodation, they have already paid hard-earned money (Which I accept will be refunded), the club would have made their own arrangements for their players and staff etc etc etc. Middlesbrough and their supporters now have to make arrangements with just a few days to the final.Total upheaval.Hull are complaining that they will now face a different club at short notice and could instigate legal action should they be defeated in the final.
Leeds were fined £200,000 for spying against Derby, Southampton have been denied competing in a game worth over £200 Million.
Southampton should have received a hefty fine and a significant points deduction and such punishment should be the standard for any such transgressions. Should in future some club in mid-season is found to have breached 'Regulation 127' in similar fashion then there will not be the opportunity to deny them a play-off place and deny them the chance to earn £millions accordingly perhaps the only sanctions available will be fines and points deductions - they won't be prevented from playing games !
A significant fine and a harsh points deduction would set a precedent.Southampton should not be treated differently to other clubs who might transgress during the season.
