The point conveniently missed before the Referendum: if they meet the criteria (a big IF) their populations will not flood into other member states as their home economies will be stable and strong.

And even if there was, it would be like the Poles who came here. Loads pore in when the UK is buoyant. Loads return when the economies equalize.

I'm in this camp too, however bad things are here, it's just as bad or worse in most places. Just happy we don't have to mess about with all this increasing federalism in the EU.

We never were. OK, there was a creep in that direction led by Chirac; but it fizzled out when he did. I am not sure there has been any genuine concerted effort towards federalism since then. The political landscape has completely shifted and the EU is no longer stuffed with left-leaning federalist member states.

Actually were we to re-apply we would be in a far worse state. New applicants must commit to the euro and Schengen and we would not get the Thatcher rebate either. So we would be moving closer to the EU centrists.

It's not a question of being happy or whatever the state of the country is in from what governing feckwits do to it....it's what I am.

The land of Nelson, Shakespeare, Churchill (for all his mistakes) and all the rest, the land my ancestors fought and died for.

I don't live here because it improves my standard of living.

English born and raised while my genetics are of these isles and I have love for both parts of the Scottish and Irish lines running through me and by extension the descendants I leave here.

I am an Anglo and will die on its soil.

Interesting points.

I suspect the various political parties will test the ground first and wont touch it with a barge pole if we have to accept the Euro.

As for the rebate..? Our bargaining position is not crap. We are the 6th largest economy and they desperately want us back.

Schengen - good!

If North Macedonia bleats about unfair treatment, let them. No-one outside their country will give a hoot.

This just isn't the reality.

The EU already runs like a federal state. It's changed rules to majority voting and various high ups already talk of a European army.

The direction of travel by the elites in the EU is obvious......If they thought it was possible it would be done tomorrow and working towards this end is in their best interests.

Oscar Wilde said it a century ago.....Power only cares about itself.....Or in other words, 'the bureaucracy is expanding to meet the needs of the expanding bureaucracy'.

When we were in I do recall being told about discussion of federalism but it was only that.

There was never a real chance of it as none of the member states wanted it.

The background politics from the bigger nations where nationalist populism is gaining traction in all of them means it is politically impossible for the foreseeable future.
 
This bullshit power struggle in Labour is a perfect way to divert from the absolute battering they got from Reform at the Council elections and make it all about them. The usual suspect media will run 24 hour stories about Andy Burnham and ignore the march of Nigel Farage.

It is manipulation.

I want significant deportations.....The EU is against that.

I'm against alphabet laws.

The EU strongly believes in them.

You can't mix water and oil.

The EU could have just been about trade.

The EU decided that it had to be much more than that.
