I am not suggesting the game was thrown but...

In a season where survival went to the last few games...

But where we made our first European final...

Was bowing out early a good thing?

We are not a big club. We cannot go for multiple trophies AND stay up. We lack the resources to do so sustainably.

Ignominious and humiliating being on the wrong side of the biggest upset in cup history but pragmatically and ultimately good?

It was a perfect storm for Macclesfield, our poor form, our injuries, plastic pitch, which their captain said that Marc guehi admitted to him out on the pitch we didn’t fancy that at all. Plus don’t forget, these Macclesfield players, most of them had league experience, it was their cup final and they were well up for it, which was the exact opposite of our lot.
by the time the European final is done we’ll have played 17 games in that competition, so it probably did do us a favour getting knocked out early, but we could’ve at least avoided the embarrassment of defeat against a non league team and got knocked out by Brentford the next round!

it 100% was a blessing.

A club with our resources can manage 1 decent cup run, and barely that. Wouldn't have been any point winning a couple of games and that jeopardising our european run, or prem survival.

IF we win the conference, I'd put 100% focus on the Europa next season. And would put out a team of kids for both domestic cups, completely happy if we exited both in the first round.

Shades of Man U pulling out of the FA Cup in 99/00... (well not really, Man U were asked to play in the inaugural Club World Championship in Brazil and their participation was thought to boost England's chances of hosting a future World Cup) - they obviously were the holders at the time though

But, I guess the point is you can play too many matches in a season. The best teams can put out a weakened team and still win matches. That doesn't work for us in the Premier League and it didn't (quite) work for us when we tried it against KuPS.

I don't think we would have got this far in the Conference if we had to fit in FA Cup games as well.

Unbelievable Jeff.

A blessing in disguise. They'll talk about it on TV every time a non league club comes up against a bigger side for the next few years, but if we manage to lift the Conference League trophy no Palace fan will care.

there was something wrong about that day - definitely OG set us up to fail.

Yes we'd played a lot of games over Xmas but he said the players would have a 3 or 4 day rest afterwards (he went back to Austria) so why not go strong and then take players off, just as he'd done in Dublin a few weeks before.

Then loaning Esse out the week of the game (Coventry weren't interest in the cup) and playing a 16 year old in that position.

I also thought the support was poor that game - no one seemed to care, as if we've won it now so who cares what happens in the future.

Probably the worst defence of a Trophy in c150 years.

I don’t think it was anything sinister, we just seriously underestimated them and we got what we deserved

That time when Oliver played Esse from the start and took him off at half time. He said Esse had zero.. That is ZERO defensive sprints.

You can't play a player like that in a team. Im sure even Messi had several each game.
