welcome to Brennan Johnson

I'd actually play him tomorrow as right wing back and give Munoz a rest (in preparation for Thursday). I know he has been absolute turd, but I honestly think if he gets a goal (or even as assist) it will trigger his belief and confidence again. I don't believe it's a system thing. He just needs more game time to come good.

I'm fairly confident he will play tomorrow whether in place of Sarr or Munoz as it's wise to give them a rest. So he'll have another chance to do something!

Another game where he'll do bugger all and yet we will be told to give him a chance, because if we pretend he's a good player maybe he will magically become one

I wouldn't mind that his end product has been poor but he's bloody useless in build up and all

It’s an interesting debate about buying expensive players with PL pedigree to buying (at least slightly) cheaper players with potential for the PL.

Our biggest successes have definitely come from the latter (Wharton, Eze and Olise from The Championship, Richards and Munoz from abroad, Canvot can probably be added to that list now too). There have been failures though too - Franca particularly.

I guess Hendo was pretty big money for a decent PL keeper when we already had a fairly decent one but that worked out very well.

I’m sure in Johnson’s case along with JSL it was a last ditch effort to persuade Ollie to stay, as you say, our biggest successes have come from the championship and I could see another couple coming this summer if certain teams fail to go up in the playoffs

In JSL’s case it was because JPM looked like he was leaving and that would have left us without a forward who could lead the line on his own. Of course events meant we ended up with both but it looked at the time like a straight one in one out situation.

Yes I think if we’d left Ollie without a centre forward as well he would definitely have self combust 🤣

Anyone could see that Tottenham had dumped him. He is not quick, lightweight and clearly does not have an eye for goals. There have been some very mysterious buys. Franca especially. Ferguson. But Sarr who took us about five years to get was a steal.

It’s football. You buy a load of players some prove to be great, some good, some average, some inconsistent, some totally crap. Johnson falls into category 5 until proven otherwise.
It’s not just totally crap, Johnson doesn’t even look like he’s breaking sweat to me, is that a player really giving his all? There’s been comparisons with Pino, but whatever anyone thinks of him, at least he comes of the pitch having given his all, he does try to make things happen and is always involved

I’m not so sure, it was Franks who didn’t seem to fancy him, he scored a few goals for them, my spurs supporting cousin said he was okay, certainly not the worst performer they’ve had the last couple of years before we signed him, and I’ve got to admit I was quietly pleased when we signed him after remembering him looking lively and scoring some decent goals for Forest

I just think he seems to be coasting for us

It's not just the effort of strolling, I had a closer look at his successful passing stats and they are poor overall, far worse than any other player in the top half of the pitch. The ball will go to him and a third of the time he will lose it, which, when the team is looking for an advantage, isn't good enough.

I think he's better than he's currently showing (not difficult).
There's evidence that he can be effective from his spells at Forest and Spurs.

However, sometimes players suffer mid career drops in form and never recover.
Their best years remain their early years.

Look at Harry Winks who was viewed as one of the best young midfielders in the country and won 10 caps for England.
His career has since been on a downwards trajectory.
I've watched him in recent seasons at Leicester and the effort is there, but it's just not happening for him.

Or Dele Ali, who has got progressively worse as time has gone on.
Now some of his decline has been due to issues outside the game, but he should at least have retained his ability to play at a good level.

Mason Mount is another who has gone backwards.

I'm sure there are those on here could provide plenty of examples of young players whose careers take a nosedive.

Sadly some good comparisons there, hopefully we’re not there yet with Johnson and he may come good, but there’s obviously a worry that this possible ‘nosedive’ has cost us £35 million

I think a lot of those players (and others with similar mid-career slumps) have had injury problems. Johnson hasn't, he's just playing poorly!

I don't especially mind signings not working out, a certain percentage will always fail. I also recognise that transfer fees and wages are what they are, and don't expect more from Johnson than I did from Sarr, for example.

It's the implications of expensive failures for Palace that worry me. I feel we suffer more than most if we spend big and it doesn't work. A few years ago Parish was talking about premier league wages (I think actually he was talking indirectly about Benteke). He said that once you've given player X over £100k p/w you've immediately made him too expensive for 95% of clubs around the world to take him off your hands if the player doesn't perform. Even if you are prepared to sell him for far less than you paid, his wages mean you cannot easily move him on.

That's painful enough for a Chelsea or Man Utd, but for us it's a higher percentage of the wage bill committed to a handful of players. The overall wage bill is restricted to a percentage of turnover, and we (like most) are near the limit, so there isn't much wriggle room. We just can't have Nketiah and Johnson taking home £200k p/w between them and contributing nothing.

I think he'll play today with a chance taken to rest one or two of those who might start on Thursday.

If he does start we can all do our own 'scouting ' report on him.
In his games so far he's only had perhaps a couple of chances to score which would indicate he's either not getting into the right positions or we're not providing the service to get the best out of him.

What has surprised me has been his lack of ability to get away from players, even when he outpaces them.
He seems to lack the raw physical strength to hold off the challenges and he concedes possession too easily.
Perhaps he requires passes inside the defender so it becomes a straight foot race between him and the defender to get on the end of the pass without the need for a physical confrontation.

I hope he's one of those players who can do a couple of things well, but can do little else. He's shown one or two brief signs of being able to cross it well from the right wing, and of getting into scoring positions when the ball comes in from the left. Perhaps if played wide right he'd do well. Perhaps playing him in a more narrow position, as our system requires, is highlighting all his faults. Those faults are though, as you say, glaring.
