.....has become a political hot-potato.
Sigmund Freud claimed to have a wonderful understanding of psychology and yet he confessed to being totally flummoxed on 'what women actually want'..... Part of Freud's analysis was a declaration that women seem to keep changing their mind.
Psychology/Sociology/History/ideology/religion/spending-statistics/ etc.....all attempt to answer the question. The behaviours of women born with great wealth (and not much responsibility) often gives a few pointers - to what they really want.
We all know the 'Reality TV' story of the gang of women dropped onto a desert island, and meanwhile a gang of men were dropped onto the neighbouring desert island.....different outcomes, different story on each island.
The behaviours of women, in a women's prison, is radically different to that of men in a men's prison. So clearly the question, in the OP, does need addressing.
With all that variance out there, maybe the question cannot ever be answered ?

What men want has mostly been easy to understand and to document. The average man, that is.....
- enough food in his belly, & beer at the weekend.
- an acceptable amount of recreation in his underpants...with or without offspring.
- an harmonious family life & strong longterm bonds.
- a roof over his head, a vehicle to drive
- good relationships with all & sundry
- his football team having won their most recent game etc etc....
for a reasonable subset of men , you can add
- climbing the pyramid of society & the workplace
- winning, at the cost of peers losing. Football or otherwise.
And yet we all know people who eschew all of the above. Some men and certainly some women ?
So, help us with your opinions, to answer the question in the OP

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a motivational theory in psychology proposed by Abraham Maslow. It organizes human needs into five levels: physiological, safety, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization. Often visualized as a pyramid, this hierarchy suggests that human motivation...
