Labour Party politics

The doctors had a good pay rise and a decent offer this year, Streeting and Starmer are looking like the good guys and the doctors are looking daft for not accepting bumper money.

If possible chuck them out they have been taking the piss for too long.

😎

I wonder if you dig deep it could be some of these ‘students’ either lied, couldn’t understand the forms or got someone else to fill them out.
Alternatively they fitted a DEI mould and hmg suddenly realised they were going to get found out so held their hands up 💁

There have been reports of widespread abuse of the system. I think this is more about fraud than anything else.

I bet we don't get out money back.

Why oh why is this under Labour Party Politics the student loan fiasco was introduced in 1990 and after some tinkering it has failed those involved. i have always vigorously persuaded my son to avoid debt of all kinds, the only sensible debt would to my mind be a mortgage.

Then the universities/colleges should be liable.
That is part of the fraud. We are not talking about Oxford or Cambridge more like the University of Camberwick Green.

As usual it's the government and civil service that has buggered this up.* There are some genuine claimants mixed up in this but recently I saw article which said thousands of Romanians were getting money from made up colleges and degrees

Any time the government (any) hands out money the crooks are waiting and are far more sophisticated than the authorities.

I remember when the Tories announced that they would provide support for businesses, during COVID, straight away I and others on here said "here comes the fraud". Of course the Sage of Truro told us it couldn't possibly happen well we know how that ended.

You are of course correct.

However, that looks at the picture from the failings not the benefits.

Also, human nature combined with the nature of public service? There will always be those exploiting any release of public money to the great unwashed; and insufficient resources and skills in the public service to completely prevent it.

Criticism and accountability is critical to inform reform, but success should be measured in % that reaches target.

I can't remember the details unfortunately, but I seem to remember a similar situation where foreign students where being placed on foundation courses to get around a visa restriction?

As with most things these days, it is all more or less a racket.

I wouldn't say he lost it he is just putting morons right , I know the feeling i'm forever correcting neanderthals who say the navy should open fire and murder illegal immigrants in inflatable boats ,these are families women and children seeking a better life ,plain cold calculated murder is not an option. Did you bother to listen to the snippet? Another Tory begging Nigel to join the Tory mark two project.

So you think the Select Committee are '' morons ''....interesting. I assume that's because of your devotion to Starmer.

Whenever he is asked about what HE is doing NOW about any given issue, his default is to blame everything on the last government. People are sick and tired of hearing that.

He's not a dynamic ' doer ', he's a process driven box ticker. Government rarely moves at pace, but whenever Labour do it usually results in a U-turn as the outcomes haven't been thought through properly.
However, in times such as these you look to leaders that can respond quickly to events. Starmer is basically claiming that he can't defend the country or it's interests because the Treasury hasn't approved / funded it !

I've not met anyone that thinks that the Navy ( what's left of it ) should open fire on the small boats. But I've met loads of people who are still waiting for Starmer to deliver on his promise to '' smash the gangs ''

I am a pub nomad and the opening fire argument has often popped up just to be shot down ( pardon the pun). Immigration has dropped like a stone and the M.P. concerned was auditioning for a job with Reform, Restore or one of these other ridiculous Far Right Parties that are according to them not racist but manage to offend every minority group and draw police attention. Two gang members who like boating got nineteen years a piece last week. I'm confident of Labour having most seats against a fragmented right wing, Orban getting thumped badly at the ballot box shows the direction of travel. Are you tackling shop lifters as Badenoch is suggesting 😆 !

The Select Committee were holding Starmer to account over defence. You have, as is your tendency, deflected onto something else - immigration. Specifically the small boats.

Which, according to the stats on the University of Oxford's Migration Observatory site, far from having '' dropped like a stone '' have gone up - ''The number of people crossing the Channel has increased significantly since Labour took office. There were around 41,000 arrivals in 2025 – close to the record levels reached in 2022, and 13% more than a year before. ''

So what happened to '' smashing the gangs '' ??

I will repeat two of them got NINETEEN years a piece, as for pubs they are not all as good as the Wellington Rob Jones has done well in creating such a success. According to google
AI Overview

UK immigration and net migration are falling significantly, reversing the record highs seen in 2022–2023. As of late 2025, net migration dropped roughly 70% to around 200,000, returning to pre-Brexit levels, primarily due to fewer work and study visas granted. That last bit is due to Labour in action.
