Crystal Palace vs. Fiorentina match thread

Fiorentina were far too open for the first leg, and their defending was terrible at times. Also, you have to ask, did they do their homework on us at all? I mean, Munoz didn't just have space in the first half, he had enough land to have a good harvest, raise some sheep, and build a homestead. They perhaps underestimated how good we can be when teams don't shut up shop. Nevertheless, we took full advantage and put on what was our best performance in probably six months. I also have to mention Pino. I don't know what the coaching team has been putting on his Weetabix, but he looked every inch a superstar-in-the-making in that cameo.

Before the next leg, Fiorentina play Lazio in an evening kickoff on Monday in a big game for them.
Being wise after the event it might have been a good game to give Johnson some more time. They looked a bit knackered later on and his pace might've worked.

All round great performance.

Really encouraging to see Munoz, getting some more space and in attacking positions.

JPM was pretty poor, think Larson would have had a couple of goals last night.

Kamada was the difference maker, great ball which lead to the Mitchell goal, and great cross for Sarr.

Pino was unbelievable when he came on. Literally unplayable. Full of intent.

Great performance! The memories of Stockport 2001 and Sheffield Wednesday 2010 are a distant memory compared to this!

Not to sound negative but my only concern was our attacking threat. Until Pino came on we seriously missed an attacking threat through the centre (Eze sorely missed). Need that bit of magic to kill off a game. Pino or else Johnson needs to start at next match!

Newcastle match: do we rest up or push for a full strength 11?

How about well played you stopped them playing and then out played them , not they was awful thats why we won , its is very much a theme on here , teams beat us they out played us , we beat them the other team had a off day , here's a little thought maybe we was the better team it does happen

I am not going to be judgemental apropos the quality of the other teams based on Fiorentina's performance last night.
We certainly did not witness the best version of them and I suspect they will prove far more challenging opposition on their own ground next week.
An added bonus is that Dodo will miss the return leg.

He was particularly s*** tonight. Missed three sitters as you say but his overall play was also way off the pace. A first touch which is further than most people can kick it and not showing or making runs for our players when in possession.
very harsh - it's his first game in over 3 months so was clearly rusty.

Give de Gea credit for making a great save for one of those chances.

Headers could have been better, especially the 2nd one in the second half, but he was a nuisance all night and kept the defence busy

This was Mateta's 4th game since he returned from injury, admittedly this was his 1st start.

It reminded me of bygone days when supporters used to hurl toilet rolls from the Holmesdale Terrace.
There was a lot of parents back then who thought their offspring did a lot of poo because of the disappearing loo roll from bathrooms across south east London approaching match day 🤣

I think the problem is he’s looked rusty ALL season, he seems to look so languid at times, lacking in energy and like he’s really struggling in games, and that’s in the first half sometimes

Heading is one area that has definitely not improved with time, it's rare to see a good thumping header these days, the odd Calvert Lewin perhaps.

I was lamenting this when Sarr put that one away.

🙂

Me neither, I was surprised how poor they were, I’ve thought all season we weren’t going to win this because once we got down to the knockouts we’d really start to see a bit of quality from the opposition, even in this tournament, but not so, after last night I’ve changed my thinking, we CAN win this thing

It's similar to a feeling I get at work of not being good enough and not knowing what I am supposed to be doing. Then you meet your work-mates and realise they are in an even worse state and suddenly I feel much better.
In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king, as the saying goes.
I make us favourites, especially as Strasbourg now look quite likely to be knocked out.

🤣 🤣
Some of course might have disappeared from the toilets at the bottom of the grass bank behind the Holmesdale.
I suspect some supporters in dire need of a 'Bowel Movement' might have slid down the wet grass with some rapidity to discover to their horror that the toilet roll holder was bare.

Strasbourg lost 2-0 at Mainz but they are unbeaten at home in their last 7 games.
