Crystal Palace vs. Fiorentina match thread

Let's hope later this evening we are "seven seconds away" from a comfortable 4-0 home win with no injuries or suspension yielding cautions to key players.

COYP!
With a chap called Ndour in the opposition line up I thought this was very much a cheesy Neneh Cherry gag; the predicted scoreline was the result of a vivid moment of imagination/inspiration. What a brilliant result!

Let's avoid any headless chicken behaviour, perform in Florence and look forward to a first European semi final. Hopefully musician names in opposition line up is an omen and our next opponents have someone called "Luniz". If they do, rest assured "I've got 5 on it".

COYP!!

Really good first half, we was all over them on our right hand side. sat back in the second.
Thought Wharton and Kamada ran the midfield . Canvot looks like a different player, in fact, apart from Mateta, they were all decent.
Thought Pino was great when he came on, best I’ve seen him play.
Great win.
Looking forward to going to Florence next week.

Was pleased , went to sleep at the start of 2nd half , but then got on top of them , Mateta looked fit but not match fit ,
As for missing sitters I love that comment , he missed 3 chances give the keeper some credit he got across the goal to block before Mitchell scored , if Henderson had done that save everyone would be saying what a great save , I have no idea what happened with his 3rd chance he got it totally wrong almost missed it , it was a floating ball couldn't tell on TV if the ball stopped in the wind , love TV Pundits they have 1 line only he should have scored , like they scored every time ,

It's halftime we are 3 up slowly we are starting to look like a team again , get a good result with no injuries sunday,, things are looking more positive , Guessand some good runs but not sure for a big lump he goes down far to easy , people got excited by his runs but no end product , Cavot is slowly growing he still has some learning to do , but needs to be pulled in a little don't gesture to the ref about cards he will get himself sent off and I hate it , Pino lovely cameo all in all good win COYP

Robbie Savage is quite a good pundit, on that particular miss he pointed out that JPM was actually landing when he headed the ball so it was a mistimed jump. They did say it was windy last night so perhaps your observation about the ball holding up in the air is correct.

I said yesterday if we play as we have in other Conference games we will lose both legs.

It was obvious from the get go that our tactics had changed. The was a lot more urgency and some long balls as well as the tippy tappy stuff. We also didn't go for the long throw in every single time and mixed it up a bit.

Pino is playing far better as a no 10 rather than a winger. We started to slip away in the second half and I thought they would score. He changed the game and put the Italians on th back foot again.

I believe we now have a nice problem regarding the no 10. Guessand had a good game until he faded he provides work rate and physicality (like Ayew) and was unlucky not to score. Pino then comes on and provides guile, a nice contrast.

Hope we can now use these options depending on who the opponents are.

It was a welcome first half performance, and one that we all deserved after a long season. The 3rd goal clearly the icing on the cake and unlucky in the last 15min not to have a couple more.
I thought Pino stood out for all the right reasons when he came on. What will be interesting to see is how he does in the Premier League. He has looked ok at times in the European games where we had a lot of the ball and the game is slower and less physical. However I think he struggles in the Premier League because it is the exact opposite. He gets knocked off the ball very easily and doesn’t have the same amount of time to get it under control. Hopefully last night will give him more confidence and I hope he may be a player that excels in their second season once they have adapted to the league.

Some points I noted:

Munoz had his most positive display of the season. After a passive start he was putting in crosses and making a real nuisance of himself in attack. The type of performance that turned heads in Europe last year;
Lacroix needs to watch out grabbing players from behind. A trait that could lead to more penalties;
Stupid yellow card lunge by Richards means he has to watch himself in the return leg. After that the slate is wiped clean for the semi-finals;
Kamada had one of his best performances continually looking around for opportunities to play the right ball before he receives it rather than hit and hope;
Guessand brought a lot of energy to the forwards before he was clogged. Pino continued this when he came on. Both wanted to play the ball forwards not sideways, backwards, sideways, backwards…..yawn!
Finally Tyrick Mitchell again produced his quiet steady and competent game but with a goal that turned the game and possibly the tie in our favour. In the running for POTY?

Hats off, for a splendid performance and victory.
I certainly never expected to us to take a 3 goal lead to Florence and we are now firmly in the 'Driving seat'.Fiorentina looked somewhat limited last night and I expected more from them. It would be a major disappointment and surprise if we never progressed into the semi-final.

A negative for me was the performance of Mateta, who once again showed us his penchant for not scoring when well placed and his overall contribution was woeful. Thanks heavens that he was removed from the action and Sarr deployed as a striker - Mateta would not have scored with a header that Sarr dispatched with such aplomb.
Whilst Guessand had his moments, I was not overly impressed with his contribution and was calling for him to be replaced by Pino.
Overall, a night of joy.

I was surprised by the result and even more so by your burst of jubilation the biggest conversion since decimal. 😉

Me neither, I was surprised how poor they were, I’ve thought all season we weren’t going to win this because once we got down to the knockouts we’d really start to see a bit of quality from the opposition, even in this tournament, but not so, after last night I’ve changed my thinking, we CAN win this thing

I wasn't that impressed by Mateta last night, but take a more charitable view of the reasons behind it.
He looked rusty, a yard off the pace and less than fully fit.
Glasner has mentioned the problems around his knee and managing his minutes and I would think he will have limited time in the remaining games this season if Larsen remains fit.

I am not going to be judgemental apropos the quality of the other teams based on Fiorentina's performance last night.
We certainly did not witness the best version of them and I suspect they will prove far more challenging opposition on their own ground next week.

I agree Willo. OK, he took his penalty well enough, but otherwise he continues to miss far too many good scoring opportunities. Assuming we sell him in the summer, I for one won't be sorry to see him go.

A great night and atmosphere at Selhurst which I thoroughly enjoyed from my sofa. Surely our 3 goals should see us in the semi finals. Great team performance. Well done lads.

I vote for us, in future, to play one game every three weeks.

We are gentlemen of a certain vintage and members of the same 'Darby & Joan' club on this matter !

Especially as they’ve got nothing to lose now, they’ll probably throw the kitchen sink at us, but that’ll suit us, we can do what we do best, absorb the pressure and catch them on the break in the space they’ll leave. Even if they do get a couple I just can’t see us not scoring over there

Agree completely.

The one thing I do think Mateta is currently better at is linking with the number 10s and other attacking players, which provides quicker breaks. This is most likely just because he's played longer with the team and has got a better understanding with his teammates and vice versa. Hopefully JSL can also get up to speed with this part of his game and then we'll have two genuine options to play up top for the rest of the season. Which if we aim to be competitive in our two remaining competitions, we'll certainly need.

Fiorentina were far too open for the first leg, and their defending was terrible at times. Also, you have to ask, did they do their homework on us at all? I mean, Munoz didn't just have space in the first half, he had enough land to have a good harvest, raise some sheep, and build a homestead. They perhaps underestimated how good we can be when teams don't shut up shop. Nevertheless, we took full advantage and put on what was our best performance in probably six months. I also have to mention Pino. I don't know what the coaching team has been putting on his Weetabix, but he looked every inch a superstar-in-the-making in that cameo.

Before the next leg, Fiorentina play Lazio in an evening kickoff on Monday in a big game for them.

Whilst of course I recognise his sterling contribution last night, I have considered the opposition who were somewhat unimpressive.
Pino did impress against unimpressive opposition but his performance was worthy of plaudits.
