Crystal Palace vs. Larnac match thread

I, like most, admit to being incredibly frustrated that we've not scored in two home games against Larnaca. Credit to what they do though and their defensive record in the competition, but it's horrible to watch.

You'd think at some point at home they have to take a chance and come forward more unless they simply try and play for penalties and my hope here is that this will leave the gaps that we can exploit. Generally we have been better away.

My fear is that they score first, in which case they'll have 11 men in their penalty area for the rest of the game.

And this is where I get frustrated with Glasner. Agree totally with Ambrose last night. It was a complete waste of a player in playing three centre backs against a team sitting in a low block the whole game.

English teams in Europe all round didn’t have a great week

Our game was bit of a let down after a fast paced run at them 1st half from last Thursday.

Larnaca played deep like we knew they would & try to catch us on the break - 1st half they didn’t care about pressing
2nd half they had 1 close chance from corner - & it was close enough to think “ yep we all could see that coming”

Is this a set play thing that Oliver just has no other tactics in his bag.

What if 1 or 2 players said “ this ain’t working I’m going rogue to this style of play “
Would Oliver drop them next game ?

Oliver did say he was watching a number of games & did his home work

But we have no one who’s shooting outside the box to either score or get the spill we miss that part of our game
We have become too safe

Shout outs to Johnson & Kamada there was 1 , single effort from them where JP nearly scored

Apart from that Isle of Man council has been granted £3000 to fill pot holes on main road
( yes I made it up cos it sounded as entertaining & interesting as the game last night )

Perhaps Glasner considered withdrawing a central defender, deploying 2 instead of 3 and using 2 full-backs offensively.Mitchell of course could have filled the left-back berth but there might have been a quandary as to who to deploy at right-back.
I very much suspect that had Munoz been available, Glasner would have reverted to a back 4.
I reiterate that I was somewhat perplexed when JSL was replaced by the mis-firing Mateta.

As much as I hated the punditry because the majority was totally inane, there was one decent point and that is both Wharton and Kamada were coming too deep to pick up the ball which was entirely unnecessary and then looking to play it sideways to Guessand/Mitchell or Johnson/Sarr. This was easily marshalled by the defenders who basically had everything in front of them. We didn’t make them turn much at all.

The main point of this is that Lacroix or Richards or Canvot should have been the players bringing it to the halfway line and looking to pick out Wharton and Kamada in the channels. We needed to have their midfield and defenders attracted out of position so they could then lay it off into space and turn their full backs.

We did it a couple of times but there seems to be little understanding between the players of when and when not to overlap.

Considering their players average age was 30 ish they didn’t look that tired in the second half which makes sums up how much we worked them.

Larnaca are the most boring mind numbing side to watch. I don’t care what the Opta stats say about them not conceding goals, if you are not going to try and play football and win the game then go pick olives instead.

It's excruciating to watch but so long as it's effective for them they'll keep doing it.

Pep often moans when teams sit deep against City, a certain FA Cup final springs to mind! I usually think "oh f*ck off Pep"...so I can hardly complain when teams do it against us when they view us as the Big Team!

I'll say it again though, it is so painful and infuriating to watch. I pray we can we find an early breakthrough in our 3rd match against them so we don't have to endure another 90 mins of the same monotonous crap.

Agree, and agree with other sentiments, however my criticism will always be toward the teams with the far superior resources who are still unable to overcome this approach. I view it as the responsibility of the manager they're employing to identify that solution.

Went for a pyss during the second half. The bar area below the Arthur was cram packed. Must have been over 500 not bothered with the shyte outside.
When Glasner arrived two years ago, he took over a fantastic group of players. However it happened, he failed to persuade the club to keep them together. We lost Olise who is now a contender for Balon d'or. Then Eze. Then Guehi.
We have made a series of incomprehensible buys under Glasner.
If you compare last night to two years ago, when we hammered Man Utd at home, we are unrecognisable. The football we are playing is terrible. Our tactics are laughable. So one dimensional. Very few players dare to shoot outside the six yard box. Our midfielders virtually never shoot and when they do it is always wide. No one dares dribble. We are desperately boring.
What has happened?
Glasner will be lucky to find another job in the Premier with this season's offerings. If this is the future of football, then you can keep it. We have really let things slip. So disappointing.
Even Wharto has lost his spark. If it wasn't for Sarr, there would be no attack.
There are still glimpses of talent out there, but really, we have to change our tactics and clearly that is not Glasner's plan. Im not sure after last night that he really understands the game.

100%. However horrific it is to watch, they have every right to play like that. So far for them it's been successful, it's completely up to us to find a solution. I think we will, but only just!

Those players wanted a bigger team and no way could a team like us give them the wages that the clubs they are at now can.
The problem isn’t our team, it’s Glasner and our success under him. Now teams play defensively against us as we do against the top prem sides. Sadly Glasner can’t change our formation or our style of play. He did great for us as he did at previous clubs but our only hope is a good replacement manager to take us forward or to be able to change formations depending on who we are playing. Not easy as we have to accept as fans that we are a mid table prem team with an occasional win against the big boys 🙂
