A Beaver to replace Churchill

I would take your point if Churchill was replaced by notable members of our minority - see for instance the current members of the Order of Merit (and compare to illustrious former members).

However, sticking a hedgehog on was probably designed to offend no-one. If they (whoever "they" are?) are guilty of anything, it is trying too hard to steer a middle course.
That is part of the midset for sure.

Who would be offended by Churchill? Only those who are morons or shouldn't be here in the first place.

If you're this upset by the badger substituting Churchill, just imagine what you'd be like if it was Lenny Henry or Tony Blair they were replacing him with.
Give it time. Give it time...

Beavers are of course tree fellers, so will offend the Greens (and the Irish).

Dardanelles. Bengal.

Folk can find a reason to be offended by anyone or anything.
If they are that offended, what are they doing here?

I'll bite

Winston Churchill "I am strongly in favour of using poisoned gas against uncivilised tribes to spread a lively terror".
I think the uncivilised tribes might have been justified in feeling a tad miffed.
Sure we owe him one for 1940, etc

But virtually all those who are held up as untouchable heroes were quite flawed people in reality - Churchill, Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, Che Guevara ....the list is endless.

It makes no sense to judge people of the past by modern standards. I'm sure none of us will fare well through the lens of revisionism.

I'm pretty sure dropping poison gas on villages at least raised an eyebrow in the 1920s.
Depends on how it was spun. You also need some context.

I expect people were too busy mourning their lost fathers, sons and brothers in WW1 to care about some 'savages'. Either that or learning how to do the Charleston.

Maybe we should have just shot them. That's more civilised.
