Crystal Palace vs. Wolverhampton match thread

I've seen us play much better than that and lose.

Another distinctly underwhelming performance but a very important three points.

My hope is that while there is still work to be done, there is enough of a gap between Palace and West Ham that the players can start to look less anxious.

Yesterday was a challenge when you consider that was a ' scratch ' back three. Riad in particular didn't look comfortable. A better team than Wolves would have taken advantage of that. The failure to land an experienced central defender, if only on loan, was - in my opinion - an issue before Lacroix got injured. And now even more so.
I wholeheartedly concur.
Certainly privately, and perhaps on HOL, I was expressing the opinion that it was imperative that we bolstered our defensive ranks.

Looking at the highlights, I think Palace had as many attempts on Wolves goal , as we did our own. 🙂 Fortunately, Henderson was on form, to prevent further OG's 👍

In his defence, it must be said that, in my opinion, he is also overwhelmed by his role as the only regular representative to the public. In Austria or Germany, more club representatives have to answer questions from the press. For example, if players fail to meet expectations, the sporting director comes under fire, and if investments are made too late, the club management has to face questions from the press. Ollie also emphasised this once in an interview in Austria, saying that this was completely new to him, that he was practically the only one who had to answer questions for the club on a regular basis. Combined with a press that weighs every word and exploits it, this is certainly not easy for him, especially now that he is under a lot of pressure. But hey, he's had his sunny days here too, and like other managers, he'll survive the rainy ones and learn his lessons. He likes new challenges anyway.

We do not play with out-and-out wingers. We 'Shoehorn' those who have played out wide into playing as 'Narrow' No 10s.
I know what you mean! I meant for the future of the squad. We're not going to play this system next season. Well, I don't think so anyway. With the manager situation, this season feels over. We'll limp to safety and get knocked out of Europe on penalties or something.

I am actually considering the possibility that his words were not an admission of any culpability. It is the model of plausibility that he was asserting what he believes are the views of supporters and is engaging in repudiation.Assessing the interview as a whole perhaps his overall message is "I was good enough to win the FA Cup but now I am not good enough to integrate new players into the team" !!!!
Perhaps I am 'Way off beam' on this matter - I am intellectually starved !
I don’t think you’re off beam in this interpretation.
There was more than a hint of sarcasm in his comments.
Nonetheless, these new players cost c£100 million and they don’t look fit for purpose in the system.
Their records at previous clubs indicate that they are better than they are demonstrating at Palace.
It could be argued that the failure to integrate extends to Nketiah and Uche too.
Why can none of these players flourish under Glasner?
In my view it’s because system trumps performance in Glasner’s mind.
The system is right so the players must be wrong.

We have a new 48m striker, who we have already seen is good in the air, 3 international standard wingers, yet we have the fullbacks are crossing the ball, 😳

You could play better than that and lose 5-0. There's no escaping how rubbish and lucky we were. Which is still quite a worry as teams just won't gift us points. Except for the flip flops games at the end of the season. But if you look at us, we'll be wearing them. I challenge anyone to tell me that team is busting a gut. Anyone noticed Kamada have a go at the players in the game? Fair play to him for that. There was no movement off the ball. No supporting runs.
One genuinely dangerous pass from the wing in the second half... no one there to take it.

Yesterday's game reminded me of a 1-0 home win against almost relegated WBA almost exactly 5 years ago during covid in Roy's last season (during his 1st spell).

We scored a 'lucky' handball pen and then sat back all 2nd half to ensure we got the 3 points, which was Roy's main objective.

It was dire football and it was obvious the Palace squad and management needed a massive overhaul.

Yesterday, whilst the 3 points was critical there was no other positives. The formation, the slow build up, the lack of pace, the inability to cross, the terrible set pieces reminded me of that terrible period under Roy.

Roy had some excuses, the squad was ageing and had been under funded for years, however, OG has less excuses, other than at centre back.

Things need to change.

If we set up with 3 CBs on Thursday despite the injuries and the fact that the opposition will just sit back in a low block will be the end of OG, if it isn't already.

Yet, that's exactly what he'll do. The excuse will be that Lerma is back or something like that.

Sometimes !
Yesterday in the 1st half , Mitchell found himself in space on the left, in a good position to cross the ball but he played it backwards much to my chagrin.
Munoz has not been the effective player of old but this could be attributed to the manner in which we play.Munoz excelled when we were in a 'Transition' phase of the game, making surging runs in space down the right. When we were more on the 'Front foot' moving the ball faster he got the freedom to attack, currently with our ponderous build-up he is closed down and his attacking options are limited.

It's not your opinion , it's a fact.

As we play 3 CB's we needed at least 5 potential starters to cover for injuries, suspensions and the need to rest players. Also as one of the 3, MG, was always going to be sold potentially we needed 6.

The 1st choice 3 have impressively barely missed games due to injury in the 1st half of the season, which is a massive bonus.

Canvot at such a young age was always one for the future and probably should have been given game time with the U21s to adjust to the English game. Instead he started the season as our 4th choice.
Lerma could potentially be considered one of these 6 as a back up too.

Riad is young, has been injured for almost 18 months so will take time to get up to speed - playing him on Thursday was a ridiculous decision when we had a game on Sunday that he was always going to start. The fact OG 'complained' about this after the Thursday game was a bizarre one, as he picked the team!

Based on yesterday you can't start both Canvot and Riad in the same team - they are too young and error prone. I'd be ok with one or the other.

We are missing one extra CB that should have have been purchased last summer, maybe a decent up and coming championship performer or an older free transfer type with prem experience.

There seems to be consensus that the system won't get the best out of Pino, Johnson and possibly Guessand and Larsen so in a way it's no surprise that Glasner mentioned his failure to integrate new players.
Larsen needs early delivery when he may have the opportunity to be in space to finish chances.
This didn't happen once yesterday as we continually declined opportunities to find him early.
We lumped the ball up to him after a slow build up meaning he had no space to operate.
Johnson is not a back to goal player and requires the ball played ahead of him to run on to the ball and finish/cross.
Pino is not a left sided forward in a front 3.
He has no left foot, continually turns inside where he is dispossessed or plays telegraphed or misplaced passes.
The current way we play seems set up for these players to fail.
Moreover, with Glasner acknowledging his failure to integrate them, surely his task is to find a way of playing them which enables them to flourish.
I don't think we'll see the best of these players under Glasner and am not fooled by the fortunate result against a very poor Wolves team.
Spot on, Patrick. And that very poor Wolves team played better than us for most of the match. We were very lucky that:
  1. The wrong player took their penalty
  2. Their defender got sent off for kicking the ball away when it looked like he might have thought the ball was still in play and was simply clearing it.
Will this fortunate result give our players confidence? Thursday should answer that one but I'm not convinced.

It was clearly OUT when he was running with it.The referee blew his whistle, saw him kick the ball away so he had no option but to brandish a second Yellow.
