Romaine Esse

The issue is that in one of his earlier games he did an unexpected play that completely bamboozled the defenders and put a teammate through on goal with a great - not taken - chance of scoring. Not sure why it is fine for Wharton having a low pass completion because the ones that get through are so effective but Esse gets stick for a similar approach
Agreed

Surely you appreciate that it's because overall Wharton is miles better? I presume you aren't seriously comparing Esse to Wharton generally?

Wharton has frustrated many of us lately but that's only because he is falling short here and there of what he has already shown he is capable of.

I know it's all paper talk about Wharton moving for big money until it actually happens, but I doubt all the papers have it wrong and it's actually Esse that both Manchester clubs, Liverpool, Real Madrid etc are interested in.

Of course different degrees of tolerance will apply to mistakes when one player has run games for us time and again and the other has done all but nothing so far.

Wharton and Esse are similar ages but as footballers they are totally different (and no I do not mean one is great and one is awful before anyone says).

You wouldn't say Batistuta was awful at tracking back and positional awareness at defensive set pieces, but he and Cafu are similar ages so Cafu was great and Gabby Goal was two bob. I think it is hard to compare Esse and Wharton directly.

Wharton is in my view a generational talent as someone already said. The way he sees patterns and his distribution are hard to coach: he just seems to have it, and seems still to have it the higher the standard of the opposition. This has got him where he is so far. I remember seeing a young Andrea Pirlo play for Inter Milan in the late 1990s. He was a slight, spindly type who looked lightweight and didn't score any goals. He turned out ok and I think AW will as well (although maybe not in England - players like him seem to be more valued in Italy and Spain).

The jury is out on Esse - raw, real, dangerous when running at people, poor judgement and decision making at present. Improve on that and we'll have a real player on our hands. Fail to and he'll likely end up another Sean Scannell.

His nickname at Blackburn was the Wilpshire Pirlo ,they saw the connection very early in his career .

One is a defensive midfielder, the other is a left footed attacker, 😳 🙄

Surely you must know enough about football to understand Wharton is a light year ahead of Esse in his development?

We clearly bought Esse on the basis of his potential. Sadly he hasn’t realised that so far. Hopefully he can. It is a reminder to those saying we should pick up value in the Championship that it isn’t always that easy. Olise, Eze and Wharton are all cases where it’s worked but it is rare to have such a high hit rate.

No one has mentioned the fact that Drakes-Thomas already looks better than Esse and appears to do what the manager tells him. He is the player we should be nurturing.

The perfect example is Semenyo, coming into his peak now, 26 years old, in his early 20s he had flash's of brilliance, but no consistency, it is the any managers job to recognize that, and draw it out, a loan to Coventry is excellent for Esse (20) to asses for the rest of the season

What game was that , Wharton is better at tackling (yes I know gets booked ) makes himself available in space all the time , Esse would be static and not find space , 1 pass doesn't mean he is the next Eze , there's a 1000 kids out there that can do it , but not often in games constantly , its all about learning , he would be luxary and fans would turn on him very quickly if he kept giving the ball away or moving to receive , no good for a kid ,,
The comment was in relation to his move to Coventry. Might have been the Millwall game. If you didn't see it, it was impressive and the sort of skill that would be useful against weaker low-block teams: something we have struggled with in the Conference League in particular

I recall having some conversations about Semenyo some while back.
Some of the messaging was that he needed to add goals to his game, that Bristol City had been working with him to take fewer touches, decision-making was his 'Achilles Heal' and that he was unpredictable producing moments of brilliance then disappoint.
He is much improved from those days !

Wow.

Wharton is a generational talent in the making. If you cant see that, well, I feel sorry for you.
That doesn't mean he shouldn't be sold. His stock is still high, but there is no doubt in my mind he has gone backwards this year. Hopefully, he will find a good connection with the new attacking players. I think he would fit in better with an elite team. Unless he has a release clause I am not aware of, that means he is likely to stay in the PL for the price Parish will be looking for

I am unaware of any release clause.
My understanding is that there is a 15% sell-on clause.

I believe there's some handshaken agreement that Wharton will be sold in the summer.

He is likely to attract a high fee, so let's hope he has a good rest of the season.

Palace's midfield will largely look new by the time next season's games start.
