Romaine Esse

Pino, played on the left at Villarreal and was bought in to replace Eze who was a right footed player playing on the left and drifting inside.

Pino is also right footed, so not sure what your point is.

There is clearly some logic to his signing and his 'fit' into the formation we play. Clearly he hasn't got Eze's individual flair (who has?) and has been underwhelming of late and probably needs a rest/be dropped for a few games.

I dont think he's been electric, but I do think he's been let down with others around him.

Take the Sunderland game, scored a very good goal, and should have had a assist (won the ball back high, and put JP through). A goal and assist might have got us the win and a MoTM performance.

Thats not the only time he's been let down by JP's finishing.

Pino is a right winger. 75% of his games have been as a right winger. In the season before he joined us he played 24 games on the right and 6 on the left, so while he has played on the left, that has not been his main position. Plus he's being played as more of an inside forward than a winger with us, so he's having to learn a new role. Eventually it might work out, but why didn't the club look to sign someone who was already playing a similar role to Eze? Maybe the scouting team genuinely thought Pino was the ideal fit, or maybe Palace got excited at the chance to sign a Spanish international at a decent price and left it to OG to try and shoehorn him in.

Personally think Uche would fit the Eze role..that's where he's played in previous club. Strong and has good feet. Goal in the Conference was top quality and if Ebs had scored that......

Ok, we have Sarr, Pino, Johnson, Kamada, Esse, JRS and Uche. Who the hell plays where although I accept that Kamada may be more midfield and Esse and JRS are currently on loan and Uche will probably disappear into the midsts of time.

Trouble is pino learning in Spain he is technically better in his thought process.
Many times his passes are first time and our front can’t read it quickly enough. The last home game or one before at least twice pino passed where a striker or another player should have been.
Wright and bright made this an art. Ball to bright, wright was there for the knock on or through ball and visa versa. This is training ground stuff. Although JPM might have missed anyway but that’s not the point tbh.

Just scored for Coventry.
Positionally all over the place but knows where the goal is. He's pretty raw but there's definitely something there.
Frankie boy has probably given him a free role. Once Ollie f*cks off we can bring him back. Could yet be the new Eze. Let’s be honest Eze wasn’t tactically suited to Glasner’s system either but his ability to score a worldy or make a killer assist made him a certain starter.

If Ollie doesn’t FO at least esse will know the league we could be in.

Subbed off on 60mins.
Decent game to be fair, picked up a yellow, scored and put in a couple of really decent crosses.

Fat Lumpard definitely giving him more freedom than OG would allow.

Dont want FL anywhere near Selhurst though - Norwich now 2-1 up and looking the better team looks like another manager with no plan b

His goal tonight was very Wilf.

Let’s hope this loan and Ollie going gives us a player with a bit more experience and a lot more confidence
Just watched it, good goal. He was subbed early second half I had a quick look on the fans forum but I couldn't see why? Was he injured or tiring or was it tactical.

I don't think there's a better role in football for Eze's profile than as a hybrid left-10 in a system like ours - it's a huge part of why Arsenal will and are struggling to get a tune out of him IMO.

He's not a winger, not a midfielder and no one plays a central 10 anymore - he's very hard to accommodate in most conventional set-ups.

I think everything about Pino's playing style suggests he's a good fit for the role we've given him - I appreciate he predominantly played off the right for Villareal, but I don't think that means we have to label him as a right winger - he's an attacking player with a skillset that probably suits any role playing off a central striker. As I said previously, I think his lack of athleticism would be a major issue for him playing as an outright winger.

Given how few teams play a system like Glasner, we were never going to sign a 'left-10 specialist' and would always be a case of identifying a suitable profile and hoping they can adapt to the role - I think Pino is a perfectly good choice in that case.

How many teams play the OG formation and use the 2 No10 like we do? Answer is very few.
Look how long it took Sarr to understand the system - he looked lost the first 3 months.

Pino was clearly seen as someone who could play there and had the technical ability to succeed, and most importantly we could afford. I wouldn't say it was a natural position for Eze but he and the club made it work. Arsenal have already realised they can't play him on the left in their 433 formation as he is not a natural winger.

There are few players who currently play in the positions OG wants. Johnson seems lost at the moment too.

Man U spent c£130m on their 2 No 10s this summer and neither has been great

Yellow card early in the game. Coventry losing control of the game so Sakamoto was brought on for more energy. Hes had a great start to life at Cov. Cant wait to see him play next year for us

I wouldn't bet on him breaking into our team any time soon. JRS is the same. Great in the Championship....

Hasn't it been players that are great in the championship and pretty young, who've been our best signings?
I find it quite funny that we'll rate similar players at other teams but won't rate our own.
I mentioned this about Esse when we signed him. Rak-Sakyi had a slightly better record for Sheffield Utd. I'd still maintain that buying Esse just got us another Rak-Sakyi. Wouldn't be sure if they're good enough really. Have to see after a few games. I seem to remember some not great performances by Olise and Eze early on. With the odd flash of future skill. Which maybe proves your point, maybe mine. Still hard to know. Personally speaking, I'd have given them more of a chance.
