Guehi to Liverpool Jan?

Agree we did massively overpay for Canvot and it appears we will do the same if we get the lad from Angers.

I didn't say we couldn't get a replacement, but it will be difficult.

As i have said a number of times Tanganga in the summer for his £1.5m release clause was surely a no brainer. A decent championship defender who is still young enough to improve under good coaching.

With European football we always needed a couple more CBs and with the MG situation it was always a strong possibility he would go at some point.
Absolutely agree with that. Dont understand why we didn’t go after Tanganga and I also don’t know why we gave O’Brien away.

At the end of the day CHs don’t sell for as much as top midfielders and strikers, Harry Maguire (cough) being the notable exception!

Tanganga is not premier league standard at all. He also makes awful decisions that affect the team with either horrific mistakes or he gets sent off for terrible decisions. Cream usually rises to the top - he might have a season or 2 in the Prem but he definitely is not someone who should be a regular in the team.

O'Brien I believe refused a contract with Palace and therefore we had to sell him. Part of the backhanded-ness of our prior relationship with John Textor was that he went for cheap to Lyon so they essentially ended up with the asset revenue at a later date. In return, Textor bought us Franca......

I may be wrong but think there was a sell-on clause in the deal with Lyon and we got £3-4m out of that when he moved to Everton..

O’Brien already had experience playing men’s football in Ireland. He joined and we sent him to Swindon where he had a stand out loan period. He was expecting to join the first team squad but Roy said no and we sent him to Belgium. He had a brilliant season there winning promotion but refused to sign an extended contract as he knew Textor wanted him at OG. We sold him for €1m.

Tanganga was sold to Sheff Utd for £10m so is hardly terrible. As a squad player and using him mainly in cup matches he'd have been a reasonable, cost effective acquisition.

O'Brien was partly sold to keep Textor happy. We could have loaned him for a season and then re-assessed. He was under 24 so we would have got a transfer fee regardless so we definitely did NOT have to sell him as you state.

Did we? We have yet to see him. Consider his age. He was bought for the future. His early and unexpected experience could prove invaluable.

i assume you weren't at the Macclesfield game.

He may have been bought for the future but we have an immediate need for a CB now. Who thought MG might leave this season and we would need to bring a replacement in.

I can't condone OG's outburst but he clearly has a point.

Did we overpay for Canvot? Of course we did. He may mature into a quality CB but he is miles off it NOW, and we need someone now. MG was always going to leave and Canvot is the only CB we have purchased so he was always going to play this season. It's hardly unexpected.

After yesterday your post is not ageing well

Chadi Riad was bought to be Guehi's replacement. He's left-footed and plays on the left of defence. At the beginning of the season it was expected that he'd be back by November, which would have given us time to get him up to speed and ready to take Marc's place by the season's end or even in this transfer window. Canvot was bought as a further back-up for the future.

Things, though did not work out as hoped with Riad having a set-back when he returned to training in the Autumn. He's back now, though, and getting useful minutes today in the U21s. If he stays fit, I expect him to cement his place in the back 3 soon. As for Canvot - still got a lot to learn; the key is how Glasner & Co help him after yesterday's disaster - at fault in some way for all 3 goals if I remember correctly.

i don't quite accept that.

Yes, Riad was bought to play on the left side of a 3 and has been unfortunate with injuries. However, even if he had come back in Nov he would have been out for 10 months so would have needed maybe 6 months to get back to 100% (see Eze after the achilles injury as an example).

So essentially we went into the season with only 3 recognised CBs which was madness given the number of games we would play and OG's 3 at the back regardless of opposition.
After 6 months of the season Lacroix has played every minute i think (other than the Macc game) and Richard's isn't far behind.
We have been lucky with injuries.
I suppose Lerma and to a lesser extend Clyne could cover for the odd injury but clearly we needed more.

So the club go out and get a young foreign player with less than 20 games to his name. A great prospect yes, but a massive gamble if he needed to play say 20 games this season.

So if SP knew he would accept any half decent offer for MG, as he did in the summer and again last week, it was obvious we needed a 4th decent CB. With Riad coming back that's 5 and with a young Canvot maybe getting a few minutes here and there etc.

Then with MG leaving we at least have 3 regulars, with Riad and Canvot which seems just about ok.

Before someone says a CB would have cost loads etc and may not come if they weren't guaranteed games etc i've previously mentioned Tanganga as a cheap back up. Another is Ben Mee who was released by Brentford. Yes he's 36 and has never been fast but he is an experienced prem player and on a 1 year deal could have done a job.

Just saying there were options.

This is fair. Playing three at the back we needed more cover at centre half. We’ve been fortunate with injuries there. Now we don’t have the players to play three at the back with confidence but OG will do it anyway
