Chadi Riad was bought to be Guehi's replacement. He's left-footed and plays on the left of defence. At the beginning of the season it was expected that he'd be back by November, which would have given us time to get him up to speed and ready to take Marc's place by the season's end or even in this transfer window. Canvot was bought as a further back-up for the future.
Things, though did not work out as hoped with Riad having a set-back when he returned to training in the Autumn. He's back now, though, and getting useful minutes today in the U21s. If he stays fit, I expect him to cement his place in the back 3 soon. As for Canvot - still got a lot to learn; the key is how Glasner & Co help him after yesterday's disaster - at fault in some way for all 3 goals if I remember correctly.
i don't quite accept that.
Yes, Riad was bought to play on the left side of a 3 and has been unfortunate with injuries. However, even if he had come back in Nov he would have been out for 10 months so would have needed maybe 6 months to get back to 100% (see Eze after the achilles injury as an example).
So essentially we went into the season with only 3 recognised CBs which was madness given the number of games we would play and OG's 3 at the back regardless of opposition.
After 6 months of the season Lacroix has played every minute i think (other than the Macc game) and Richard's isn't far behind.
We have been lucky with injuries.
I suppose Lerma and to a lesser extend Clyne could cover for the odd injury but clearly we needed more.
So the club go out and get a young foreign player with less than 20 games to his name. A great prospect yes, but a massive gamble if he needed to play say 20 games this season.
So if SP knew he would accept any half decent offer for MG, as he did in the summer and again last week, it was obvious we needed a 4th decent CB. With Riad coming back that's 5 and with a young Canvot maybe getting a few minutes here and there etc.
Then with MG leaving we at least have 3 regulars, with Riad and Canvot which seems just about ok.
Before someone says a CB would have cost loads etc and may not come if they weren't guaranteed games etc i've previously mentioned Tanganga as a cheap back up. Another is Ben Mee who was released by Brentford. Yes he's 36 and has never been fast but he is an experienced prem player and on a 1 year deal could have done a job.
Just saying there were options.
