Worst Ref

Why does the ball hit his arm? Because he blocked the shot with his chest, meaning it was deflected and no longer on target.
Chalobah with an almost identical handball later in the game and it gets waved on 🙄
  1. It didn't hit his chest; it glanced his hip at best
  2. Even after the glance it was still clearly goal-bound
  3. According to the laws of the game it was a penalty and the punishment for stopping a goal-bound shot accidentally is a yellow card.
  4. The Chalobah incident was not at all similar because the ball was not DEFINITELY going to go in the net.
I hate to have to say it (because I always worry when Darren England refs our games) but he got both decisions correct even if he needed VAR for awarding the penalty.

I lost all hope when we were 1-0 behind.
At 2-0 I gave serious consideration to removing my rump from my seat and heading for the exit.
You know the saying that the light at the end of the tunnel is the headlights on the train coming the other way?
And it's Casey Willo at the throttle of the Cannonball Express.

I've seen Evidence to suggest that this was against the laws of the game - not one to suggest it's 'according To the laws of the game'. Can you provide us the Rule that says that this was a penalty and yellow card?

We’re led to believe these days that any handball in the penalty area is NOT a penalty if it’s accidental. So this clown England even announces to the watching world that it’s accidental and then still gives a penalty. Canvot’s arm wasn’t in an un-natural position either, it was down by his side. As if poor old Canvot hadn’t had a bad enough afternoon, without this idiot trying to be the centre of attention adding to his and our woes

Why is it that every single referee seems to be a Northerner. Whenever they make their post VAR announcement starting "Upon review..." it sounds like you're watching an episode of The Wheeltappers and Shunters.
You’re not wrong. Of the 23 Premier League referees 10 are from the North West, 8 from the North East, 2 from the East Midlands and 3 from the South. This includes Farai Hallam (Stevenage) who just refereed his first match. However Sunny Singh Gill from Hounslow was also promoted two years ago, given two matches and quietly dropped. Nothing to do with his handling of the matches and probably to do with his turban and the selfie with a young fan at half time in the Palace - Luton match.

Of all the London teams only Arsenal have a decent record when DH is refereeing. Palace and Brentford have had the most defeats, seven each but Brentford have had six wins. With the exception of Arsenal there seems to be an anti London bias when compared to the six top teams in the North of England. Palace being the number one hate.

Doesn't proximity matter any more? How can a defender 4 or 5 feet away get out of the way even if he wants to?
If a defender is on a yellow card it seems a better option to hit the ball against his arm then go for goal.

And of course, professional footballers could not, for instance, just kick the ball at your arm as hard as possible.
Obviously, our team would miss, but I mean other teams who can direct a ball

Another point which no-one has mentioned - in the first half Palace were given a free kick and the Chelsea player who had committed the foul (can't remember who) picked up the ball and walked away five yards or so with it before throwing it away. Surely that is a standard yellow card offence yet nothing was given.

We'd miss if Squiddly Diddly was their full back.

There is total confusion about the penalty award with different former refs giving different opinions about the situation. As an ex ref myself I find it incredible that the law is unclear about what should happen in this situation. IFAB really need to sort this out as it brings the laws of the game into disrepute and puts unnecessary pressure on refs/vars.

Or gives them a get out clause if they get it wrong.

I think statically we have an even worse points per game ratio when he is the referee than when Clattenburg reffed against us. Is it 1 win from 15 matches? I know we can't request Steve Bennett but surely enough is enough with this clown.

I hate leaving early but there was rail replacement buses from East Grinstead to Gatwick which I hadn't factored in and it didn't seem worth missing the flight to Edinburgh just to watch England celebrating with the Chelsea players following that latest travesty.

Apropos the penalty, Dermot Gallagher has explained the reason for the decision :

"The law was changed in August 2024. It was felt that if a player stops the ball accidentally with his hand from going in the goal, it isn't about handball, it's about stopping a goal. That's the difference, it's a different part of the law.

"When you look at this incident from behind the goal, it is quite clear it is going in the goal. There is no doubt whatsoever it's going to be a goal. The goalkeeper is out."

Except it hits his hip first, therefore ruling out the handball.

How the f*** is a blocking defender committing dogso?

I am unaware that he was actually asked his opinion on this incident.
Keith Hackett thought a Yellow should have been brandished and perhaps VAR formed the same conclusion but cannot intervene in such circumstances.
No, they can send the ref to the monitor, which is the entire reason these twats brought var in so they don't miss this s***.

You can be sure if that was Hughes on Enzo it would've been a straight red

My opinion on the penalty. I always look at these things as what if it happened the other way round, i.e. if a Chelsea player accidentally handballed a goal bound shot from us. Would we have wanted a penalty? Of course we would. Would it also have been fair to give a yellow card for that too? No way.

And guess what, Chalobah DID handball it. But I don't remember that being given, or even reviewed.
