Crystal Palace vs Chelsea match thread

If Mateta was listed in the transfer market as a 'striker', or 'goal scorer', could Palace get sued under the Trades Description Act ? 🙂

Perhaps these players are just not suited to the roles in the 'Glasner Way' and would benefit being deployed in different positions in a different system.
I suspect that the Glasner way will come to an end if we fail to beat Forest, Wolves or Burnley.

That is the Parish way.

Practically the same thoughts here as well. Having watched the match on Sky-Germany (much better than Sky coverage on "the island") i found myself agreeing with the commentary team about the collective loss of form. Just a couple of months ago the defence stability achieved by the team as a whole was compared to Fort Knox. Now we are so open and this started before MG left. Ok so we lost the entire right side for a number of matches but the replacements were/are not up to speed and the system merely adds to the bad form of individuals. Open spaces behind the WB'S, CB' not covering, midfield overrun as the "10's" are tracking back. Yes we are having no luck whatsoever but there is truth that you make your own if effort/motivation is correctly channeled. It's all so disappointing, the whole place seems to be drifting without leadership.
I am at loss to see where a turnaround could arise and find myself casting an envious eye at the other wannabees who all, despite player sales, injuries and manager contract end dates seem to cope better. I think I read that Fulham and Brighton have the most goal contributions from subs in the EPL. I conclude that the squad building has been less successful in our corner of south London. Again, drifting.
Last point; while I am no different to many who wish for an injection of fresh talented players, can anybody seriously say that any of the plethora of players linked albeit generally via pointless so-called sources, might bring about an immediate improvement??
Whatever clickbait suggests, we've been linked with some overpriced mediocrity and I doubt it would make any difference. We have in recent times spent good money on players who have yet to deliver and it passed my mind that a good metaphor is that of a building being constructed on solid foundations - take away the primary support columns and it collapses. We've lost the 3 best players and the DOF all in a short space of time, added weak materials to the overall load and now the edifice is crumbling, teetering near collapse. If one wishes to apportion blame then certainly the board and Parish come first, the decision making at a historic moment for the club has been awful, and secondly, the manager, who is paid enough and experienced enough to know better. Mention also, to the players, a couple of whom think they are better than they actually are - it's amazing what an international call up does to the ego.
It may seem a little dramatic, but maybe the whole thing needs / will be demolished and rebuilt from scratch. It could be we have run our course and it is now some other club's turn on the EPL merry-go-round.
Does Parish have an answer? Always eager for the limelight when times are good but nowhere to be seen or heard of when things go wrong, who knows what the next couple of games will bring. A thumping defeat by Brighton should be the death knell.

Isn't it just such a bad example of how to run any business. You don't need the CEO in the media during good times but when things are going wrong. Maybe I do him an injustice and words are said privately. However, the silence is deafening. Regarding demolishing and starting over say from the Championship (or below god forbid) is that we have no history of bouncing stright back. Even with my happy hat on, which is not usual, I wouldn't expect any better than Southampton.
Was it "Uphill" who questioned if we would have lost with Guehi playing? Answer, probably not, But would we have lost with Guehi playing during his first, say, 15 matches at the beginning of 21/22? Could be a different answer? Fitness allowing, maybe Riad (who was purchased as Guehi's replacement) or Canvot can step up.

If "demolishing" occurs, it will be because steps to halt it weren't taken. There are enough warning signs to suggest that this season could end badly. Perhaps those in charge are leaving it in the hands of lady luck now.

If you are wearing a Man U shirt, most of the rules that apply to everyone else no longer apply to you....always been like that and probably always will!
There's a very big difference if you understood the rules.

A rule change in 2024 resulted in the situation that if the ball hits a defender's hand even accidentally and the ball was DEFINITELY going to go into the net (i.e. there is no chance of another player being able to stop it, then it's a penalty. That is what happened with Canvot - the ball was clearly goal-bound, Henderson was on the floor nowhere near where the ball was heading and there was no-one who could have cleared the ball off the line.

With the Maguire incident, there were bodies between Maguire and the goal not to mention the keeper himself and so as the handball was accidental (placing out hand to break his fall) it's not a penalty. It has nothing to do with big club bias but about the laws of football.

If we get nothing out of the next 2 games, he may be gone before we play the two certainties for relegation.
Wolves and Burnley are games we would expect to win. Forest away is tougher.
The truth is that there are no easy games in the Premier League, but Parish will try to avoid the real prospect of relegation.
The Brighton game is obviously emotive. If we were to be spanked in that game, then the noise from disgruntled fans might be too much for Parish to ignore, especially if the gap to 18th is further reduced.

The ball hit Canvots hip first and slightly changed direction, so not handball and no penalty

I would temper that by saying the latest interpretation of the laws of football, as it does seem to change on a regular basis.

Just watched the first half again.

We looked good at the back when playing out, Wharton obvs does a very good job at linking the play.
But as soon as we get into the oppositions half, we have nothing.
The last third of the pitch feels very stagnant with nothing clear cut being created, more like feeding off scraps with deflections, blind passes and headers into nowhere.

Johnson is completely lost playing as a 10, with Sarr was moving over to the left to get involved.
In the good times with Eze and Olise you would often see them drop deeper towards the half way line to receive the ball and move up the pitch, Sarr done this twice, i didnt see Johnson at all.

With the changes in the squad surly Glasner has to change something to bring players like Pino, Sarr and Johnson into the game more?

4-2-3-1 seems more suited to the players we have now..

Whatever has gone wrong surely winning 2 home league games this season is enough to tell OG that he needs to change his formation or st least approach to games. But apparently not. Trying to hit teams on the counter is OK for away games but just sitting back and letting the opposition dictate the shape and pace of the game isn't working and now the other clubs have worked it out isn't going to work. Why can't he see this?
Playing without Wharton will be interesting; yes, he's good but not as good as he's been made out to be. No goals in 55 games for a midfield player is just not good enough. Particularly when no one else in our midfield can score or even try to.
I agree OG seems to be incapable to change the shape of the team. Even against Macclesfield he started with the same defensive formation. I maybe old fashioned but I would like to see us play 4-4-2 more often.
Chelsea’s first goal was a very bad goal to giveaway. Yes it was a very poor back pass but to leave Mitchell one on one was criminal.

I would go 3 2 3 2 Richard’s Lacroix Riad/ Hughes’s Lerma/ Mitchell Pino Munoz/ Johnson Sarr and if Forest want to pay 35m for Mateta at least we’re guaranteed we won’t score.

Palace are being shown up to be unprofessional.
Unprofessional at sorting their MCO issues prior to entering a European competition
Unprofessional in the transfer market in selling and not arranging cover for sold players.
A manager who says too much to the media
Players who think they are better than they actually are: shown up by Macclesfield.

Presuming that Wharton misses away fixture vs. Notts Forest given yesterday's red card? If Mateta leaves and we get no forward replacement by then , how challenged does this really leave us up front within crucial 'relegation fodder' clash? When does Nketiah return?

BBC are saying VAR got it wrong.
BBC seem to have got it right for a change. A penalty kick is given for a handball offence. If you look up IFAB page 110 it explains that to be a handball offence the arm needs to be in an unnatural position ie making the body “unnaturally bigger” than it would normally be. It also says that “Not every touch of a player’s hand/arm with the ball is an offence.”

Page 118 goes on to say that a player who “denies the opposition a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity by committing a non-deliberate handball offence” the referee awards a penalty and caution. The word here again is “offence” and under IFAB rules this means the arms moving towards the ball or in such a position to make the body unnaturally bigger. Canvot therefore did not commit an offence.
