Sunderland vs. Crystal Palace match thread

This would be the Bournemouth currently below us in the league, the BH&A we beat twice last season and the Brentford who have never played in Europe while we are?

Reality is those clubs are all in a similar boat to us. Some seasons they will find the right players and do better, some seasons they won’t and we will.
It’s not about positions or performances against each other, although I always am always wanting to win, it’s about how you manage your assets to maintain your status and what you make in recycling them at the right time and at a good profit. IMO all those clubs operate better than us in the transfer and sell on market without losing the confidence of their coaches.

But hang on we have on the whole managed the transfer and sell on market very well in recent times.

Last season we did brilliantly. We sold our best player in Olise and one of our most important players (at the time) in Andersen. We replaced both with players who were cheaper (Sarr and Lacroix) and ended up winning our first ever major trophy and doing pretty well in the League.

Before last season we managed to sign Olise, Eze, Wharton, Munoz, Guehi, Henderson all at what have turned out to be good fees.

If we are going to criticise the club for this season’s summer window then we have to give praise where it is due for all the good work as well.

As for losing the confidence of our coach I just don’t buy it. He was never going to stay beyond his initial contract and I think that was the case from the moment he walked through the door. Yesterday looks to me like an attempt to manage the narrative and deflect from the awfulness of our current form, nothing more. He has history here with prior clubs.

Our net spend in last transfer window was £12m with only A.Villa (10.7) and Wolves (11.5) spending less. This was managed by Parish who knew that we were going in to our first Europe campaign with a depleted squad, meaning we were going to have to play Thursday and on Sunday for a large part of the season. We are now reaping the harvest from that decision. Brighton are generally seen as the best run club in terms of its buying and selling policy. We have never been that great often selling players at last minute without replacing them as was the case with Eze unless you think Pino was a good replacement which I do not.

Parish is just not good at succession planning, that is my frank and honest view and therefore we have to agree to disagree on this item no offence!

No offence taken.
