Sunderland vs. Crystal Palace match thread

What a shambles that game was. Firstly, I don't think that Glasner should have been allowed to publicly state that he's not renewing his contract. He's a club employee FFS and should have kept his mouth shout and worked on resolving the footballing issues until the end of the season. Coming after the Macclesfield debacle he should have been professional. He could learn a lot about professionialism from our former captain. I don't think he should be allowed to leave with a paid up contract. His intention may well be that of trying to engineer his dismissal so that he banks money. Put him on gardening leave and let him resign if he wants out. I'll forever be thankful to him for delivering the FA Cup but I wouldn't reward him for publicly disrespecting the club. Palace is after all much bigger than him and anyone in the boardroom for that matter.

There were plenty on here wanting Glasner to clarify his contract position, because it was unsettling.
Well, now it's all in the open. Glasner is in the unfortunate position of currently being the mouthpiece for the club, so everything he says will be scrutinised.

From the snippets I've seen and read after Sunderland, I think Glasner wants to stay to the end of the season, but now it's out of his hands. Personally, I'd be inclined to let him see out his contract. The board may have other ideas.

What Glasner has also unwittingly done, is expose CPFC's financial model. And there are several models that can be used in football. CPFC's is the low-risk model. The only way I can see the new stand being built before I die, is that it becomes an absolute necessity, because of Building Regulations/ safety issue.

after looking at the post match comments its never good to to say one thing then 24hrs later done about face , if Guehi wasn't available for 6 match's we still would have coped , him leaving is no different , we all hoped nobody would offer the right money but they did ,

My son watched the game like most on here said 1st half we was ok , needed to hold the lead longer till half time would have been nice , Cant understand calling a rwb , back then not use him we all agreed on that , and make us more balanced formation , and I never buy into they cant use there other foot , god sake there on 50 to 100k a week , like hiring a plumber who can only do pipes on the righthand side of the wall but cant do it from the left .

think he may be gone by tomorrow and makes me sad how this part of history is coming to the end , feels almost like a Ian dowie moment ,

we have Munoz and Sarr back hopefully , that alone will give us more fire power , so we can push teams back , we cant let Mateta go until summer unless the deal is good .

So sad ending but we can move on and we will move on , if we get the right Manager then no reason we cant right another chapter in our history , then we can look back and remember what a great chapter we had these past 2 years , so those who are at the game next week sing loud sing proud we are the Mighty Crystal Palace

I do really admire your spin and optimism on what is a sorry situation following our best season in the top flight of English football. Sadly the situation we are in is because Parish wasted money and most of summer transfer window feeding his ego and celebrity status defending the impossible. This was despite him being warned by OG that the squad was too small for a long euro campaign and we needed strengthening in several positions if we were going to maintain momentum in all competitions. Whatever was promised at that time never happened and worst still Eze was sold near the end of the window with no replacement and Marc was also nearly out the door but for a last minute intervention by OG. Thereafter our fate was sealed, it’s well documented that the extra euro fixtures, without an adequate squad in depth cost you several league position as you try to do well at all levels. All was fine and luckily we were injury free for the start of the season. However as the season progressed injuries took there toll and our form slipped because we lacked quality in depth.

At times our bench was made up two GK and youngsters from the academy who were nowhere near EPL standard and were there just to make up the numbers and as a consequence our form understandably suffered. OG again made representation to SP about what was needed and so far we got BJ and nothing else, no wonder an ambitious manager like OG is frustrated, frankly I do not blame him.

Sadly Parish has antecedence with Managers and promises that are never delivered and all he is achieving is making this club unattractive to best coaches and players as he really thinks he himself is a frustrated DOF and Coach.

Change is needed, other teams like for example Bournemouth and Brighton seem much better run both in terms of transfers in and out and in the ability to keep managers/coaches happy. Whereas we seem to lack any ambition and are not able to make the investment needed in players to maintain even a modest level of achievement in EPL.

Devenney and SoSa are .
My point being we have no players ,looks like we are looking at taking another punt on a 19 year old striker .
Anyway it will be alright …I’ve calmed down …and breath 😌
I agree we have nothing on the bench but we also have nothing out on loan either.
I probably should not have commented on here straight after a game when feelings are running high. Glasner certainly should have kept his mouth shut!
Things are not as bad as people make out. Sarr, Munoz and Riad available next week. A signing or 2 might be in the door by then. Eddie and Kamada are not too far away from fitness. After Chelsea we have a couple of winnable games coming up.
If we are finding a bit of stability by the time we play the CL play off we all still have something to hope for.

bournmouth got relegated in 2020 after losing players , brighton have have only finished 3 times above us in the prem since 2017 and no cups , both clubs rely on selling and brighton have been lucky like us to still be giving other teams a game , and dont forget wasnt that long ago we was in admin again , we can do a brighton get relegated build a new stadium and took another 5 years to get promoted its never a clear path

Southampton survived for years by selling their best players until they didn't/couldn't find any they could make enough profit from and then fell away.
As a financial policy it may be necessary but it's dispiriting to form the foundations of a good team only to see it dismantled and an academy which largely exists to find saleable assets rather than first team regulars.
FFP hasn't made any difference when Man City can spend £400 m + and Tottenham with about £850 m of debt can buy Gallagher over Villa who are virtually debt free.

I think FFP was designed to exactly achieve that outcome

Yes, I agree after having initially been in favour of it (much like VAR).
A club like Man United can claim the advantage of having fans all round the world and while there will be some benefit the idea that all those "fans" are paying top dollar for their gear instead of knock-offs from a market is never explored.

Relegation is not the issue, thankfully it’s has not happened yet since our last ascendancy mainly thanks to the skill of Roy, who kept us up on a shoestring with little or no support in the transfer market. Even during that time Parish unilaterally renewed Benteke contract and salary when he was useless and only good at making the tea. The only people sorry to see CB finally go was Croydon Road Safety camera partnership due to downturn in revenue from speeding fines.

As for the fact. That we were in administration in 2010, whilst everyone is grateful to SP for getting together a consortium to save the club then, that was 15 plus years ago and not relevant to the situation today. Parish leadership is very much similar to that of Donald Trump, surround yourself with sycophants and adopt and instal an I’m always right and I know best culture, so do as I say. Clearly OG is the best Manager we have had for sometime now, he knew his craft, had ambitions for himself and the club (not necessarily in that order) and knew what he wanted. He tried to get Parish on board and even got promises out of him which never happened. He got frustrated and hit out, so what, Parish needs to know the truth, because if we are to be an EPL established club we need ongoing investment in the team, the alternative is carrying on like we are and then it’s back to championship we go!

… in a change of rant, why is it that North East clubs make us climb so many stairs? Sunderland was not quite as bad as at Newcastle, but at my age it’s a health hazard. I get that they want to stick away fans up in the heavens and out of ear shot, but lift access is really limited. Also, for a newish ground the concourse facilities were really poor / cramped.

With respect, Steve Parish is well aware of our situation.
From my perspective, we are not a top 6 or perhaps a top 8 club. We are a mid-table club, with a ground that only holds circa 26,000 and our revenue is far below those higher up the 'Food chain'. As Parish has stated, in terms of players we are the 'Journey' and not the 'Destination' and we cannot retain those coveted by high-profile clubs. We are labelled a "Selling club".
Even if we wanted to lavish large sums on players we are unable to do so on account of our revenue and financial regulations.
Plaudits for some of our acquisitions in the past EG Olise,Eze,Wharton, Guehi,Sarr,Munoz etc but some of our more recent signings have failed to impress, adding to Glasner's woes.

Which begs the question: What's the point of the Premier League for all bar a handful of clubs? We might be on TV more frequently but that means kick off times all over the shop.

It gave us two trophies in 2025 and memories for ever 🙂 Plus we get to see the best players in the world at Selhurst playing against our team. Sadly, we all believed because of the trophies that we were better than we thought. We have been brought back to earth much quicker than we expected :-(

Fair enough. Arguably we probably wouldn't have won anything without the players we could attract as a PL club but it has been done.
The cup win was incredible but one swallow doesn't make a summer - although it can be a good evening

Unlike you dear WIllo, I do not have the privilege of discussing this in person with Parish but being aware about something and then doing or being able to do something about it are two different issues. It’s SP job to manage all the things associated with modern day running of an elite football club including maintaining the status within the rules and regulations.I have no expectations of top six finishes or indeed winning euro competitions all I expect is top flight status so I can watch CP play the best and sometime win, especially at home. The thing that Parish is not that good at is managing team succession planning and head coach relationships, other clubs like Bournemouth (11k+ Capacity), Brentford (17K+) and BH&A (32+K) seem to much better at getting in players in a timely and structured manner thus keeping coaches happy, wheras we as a club are lacking interpersonal skills, especially with Coaches and this coupled with all the last minute and often panic buy deals we do, coupled with the often poorly managed rundown of player contracts resulting in them being ableto walk on a free or a knocked down fee. Perhaps you can discuss this Parish at your next get together?

This would be the Bournemouth currently below us in the league, the BH&A we beat twice last season and the Brentford who have never played in Europe while we are?

Reality is those clubs are all in a similar boat to us. Some seasons they will find the right players and do better, some seasons they won’t and we will.
