Newcastle vs. Crystal Palace match thread

I'm surprised by so much negativity, although I understand it on the back of a defeat.
The game was reasonably even, but they took their chances, we didn't make the most out of ours.
I thought Wharton and Hughes did well in midfield and Mateta worked hard.
Lacroix, Guehi and Mitchell played to their usual decent standard .
More controversially I was pleased to see Pino more involved today, even if not much came off for him. He's busy and you can see he has a good football brain.
Whether he can cope with the physicality is another matter, but I think if you get him in the right areas and in space then he can create.

The real problem is the players replacing those injured/unavailable are not the same quailty.
This was always going to be an issue with a squad so lacking in depth of quality.
Pretty much how I saw it .An even game until Newcastle brought on Barnes , Liveremento and another bloke . Gave them a spark and they took over the game at a time we were tiring . We just had no answer to that .
Todays game is about 15/16 premier league players we have 11/12 at best and even then trying to put square pegs in round holes .
We need reinforcements ,either players that are out or a few new faces before this gets any better . But a good effort today , anyone moaning about lack of effort wants to have a look at Wet Spam , now they are shite

As soon as we get to 65-70 mins the game swings to the opposition. Would be interested to see stats for our goals conceded after those minutes.

Terrible footballer is unfair .
Hughes buries the chance and it would be a different story .
Piño is this seasons Kamada .Gets slagged off regularly.
He will come good …trust
I think the main problem is that he tries too many tricks and flicks and dummies that don’t come off, and then concedes possession. For me the only good thing he did today was to track that late breakaway and he done well to hold up the play allowing for players to get back.

Apart from that he didn’t offer a lot else, but that can also be said of most of the team.
I try not to be too critical of individual players as we all have different opinions, but as long as they keep trying then they have my support.

Pino was completely pants again!!

Good footballing brain? Like doing a dummy and giving it away cheaply when we had Newcastle pinned in their own box at the end?!! Guehi went ballistic at him.

I support all the players but I’ve had it with him at the moment. I hope he does come good but I’d like him to spend some time on the bench when Sarr is back. Maybe he will do better coming on as sub late in the game and having some sort of impact.
It’s true he does try the flash stuff ,when simple passes are called for .

That’s up to OG or Guehi to have a word .

Dummies are for when you are 3 nil up not trying to get back into the game

Newcastle scored after the 70th minute and brought on quality subs. As normal our substitutions were late. Yes, we would probably still have lost if they came on at same time as Newcastle’s but that was the only way we could have got a result in our favour. Our team was too knackered yet again and mistakes / tiredness took over to lose us the match. Poor decisions by Glasner again in my opinion?

Dummies are also those who don't go to the pub because they don't have Sky and Palace are on.

Sure he is. But today he gave a way a stupid free kick, which lead to a goal and gave the ball away numerous times.

Too many mistakes throughout the team, especially in the second half. We were lucky to only lose by 2.
Unfair to hang the defeat on Wharton, he seemed the only one interested in attacking. Hughes hasn't scored in over 100 games, had 2 reasonable chances, but failed to even hit the target.

I didn't.

I’ll say it again. It is a miserable watch but we just cannot deal with so many of our main players being out. Put Sarr, Munoz and Richards in that team and I think a different result. Same can be applied to the whole of December.

We can all grumble about the board but if the money is not there it’s not there.

Pino… an enigma to me. there is 100% a player in there but as another poster just said, Ollie and MG need to have a serious word about the flicks and tricks. He also needs to get in the gym and toughen up as he is literally bounced off the ball every time.

My biggest concern is JP. A pale shadow of his former self.

Another match where we didn't look like scoring, but it was always going to be tough getting anything up there, with or without the s*** ref too.

On a positive note, we're 13 points above the Spammers and still only 4 off 5th.

I'm certain will start to turn things around soon, once we're back up to full strength and this ridiculous fixture congestion is over.

A comfortable mid table finish is definitely still on 🤣

If we start to wilt around the 65-70 minute mark, and the opposition take advantage, and Glasner is aware of the failing, then he needs to do something about it before the inevitable. Except he does so after the inevitable, which means he reacts rather than takes charge. So obvious that Mateta shouldn't be on the pitch after 60 odd minutes, if at all in current form, yet he persists, and waits, and waits. As someone said above, it's like he wants to be proven wrong. No plan B.

My assessment entirely.
At times he looks like a little juvenile playing in a man's game. I suspect we haven't seen the best version of Yeremy Pino.

I’m as pissed off with the way JP is playing but honestly, who do we bring in. Eddie is always injured and Uche… chicken without a head springs to mind. Full of energy but not sure he knows what to do with it.

Are there any fantastic strickers available for £10 million at the moment 😂

Stricken possibly.

Mateta, Pino and Wharton should have been replaced on 70 mins. It was obvious they were knackered / struggling then :-(

Can't fault the effort - just lack of ball control. Even Guehi was misplacing his passes
Our last 3 visits to Newcastle aggregate 0-11 - it's a difficult place to play. Our goal difference has slumped from +9 to -1
Hats off to the intrepid Palace supporters - you deserve medals.

I really think that Mateta needs a rest.
Henderson knocks long balls to him but he gets muscled off them nearly every time. Johnson gave him a good chance which he scuffed. He lacks pace and is an embarrassment while his resale value is plummeting.

I think Pino will be a great player when he settles in and he does try hard even if he is hassled and falls over a lot. Wharton is not at his best but is still our best passer and will have better times ahead.
Canvot played adequately but without Lerma and Richards we have no long-throw options.

If we can get Richards, Sarr, Munoz, Lerma and Kamada back we will be better balanced and should be OK.

Plus a couple more decent imports (or loans) and a long term replacement for Guehi is, or will be, needed.

Criticism of Henderson is very misplaced, he is after all England's No.2
