It’s not swept under the carpet though. Religious beliefs must never be used as the justification of any crime and those who commit crime ought to be found and punished according to our laws. One of the reasons why sexual crime may be higher in certain groups may have something to do with the religious texts they follow, which are at odds with our beliefs. But you keep sweeping the problem under the carpet.
It’s how you handle such beliefs within our society so that the number attempting to justify criminal activity because of them is reduced and then eliminated, that I think needs to be the focus. It’s action, not moans, that’s needed. Mass deportation of British citizens who happen to share a religious belief with others who use it to justify criminal behaviour isn’t going to happen. So what can be done? The only long term solution is to eliminate the justification and you can only do that with a relentless reeducation programme lasting for generations matched by a non tolerant pursuit of those who commit the crimes.
Removing specific religious teaching in schools and banning all religion from public life must be the answer. Religion should become a private and personal matter. Proselytising needs to become a criminal offence. It would meet huge resistance so would need to be explained at length. It would need to be done even handedly and not directed at one religion. Only our standards of tolerance, fairness and respect for others should be taught in schools and accepted in workplaces.
So no more religion on TV, other than dedicated channels. No more established Church, or public prayers. Services of remembrance to be non religious.
I will never witness it, but my great grandchildren probably will.
