My gripe with Glasner

First off I think Glasner is brilliant. However my one serious gripe is that while we have all praised him for getting the best out of this team, he seems to have given up on certain players. Surely he can find a way of improving Esse ? Also he is complaining about a lack of signings but weren’t Sosa and Uiche his picks ? Could he not get them playing better ? Also as much as I love Mitchell why doesn’t Glasner insist he gets more early crosses in ? It’s so frustrating watching him turn back or hesitate and have his effort blocked.

I think esse has an attitude problem. Sosa is injured. And Mitchell we all know his strengths are defending. He has made great progress this season in his attacks in my opinion.

Uche. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I agree prob should be given more minutes to see what he can do.

He said only this week that he approved all the signings since he arrived.

Sometimes transfers just don't work out.

So he approved Esse. A bright young player that fits the profile of what the club have been successful in doing when signing players from the Championship.

But it's not a given that Esse is going to make it. No manager in his right mind would overlook a player that adds value to the team. In his few appearances he's done little to suggest he's earned the right to more minutes than he's had.

Uche seems to me a bit of a last minute gamble. Not too much commitment on Palace's part, if he's a success, great. If not , well no real harm done.

Obviously these two are occupying place in an already thin squad so it's disappointing that they haven't made more of an impact.

I think even if he approved the signings, because it’s better than nothing, you can’t help but understand the frustration that Pinot and Kamada could have been on the bench last night and Eze and Olisse in our attack.

Does that mean Kamada and Pinot shouldn’t have been approved or signed? Definitely not. But we can’t keep winning and then replacing the players out with inferior players that wouldn’t make the team if our A listers stayed.

Where we genuinely could be without the Board restrictions is having our summer signings being our bench and a much bigger step up on Esse, Uche etc and then spending a further £100m to actually replace Eze and Olisse.

That is what I feel Glasner is referring to. He managed to somehow make Sarr so good we barely miss Olisse despite him being an inferior player, we are now asking him to do the same with Pinot, we tried to do the same with Canvot for Guehi and will likely ask him to do the same with a cheap bargain basement striker for Mateta.

Curse of his success with our inept Board. “Oh, you can turn dog turd into something decent, instead of reward, let’s keep giving you dog turd then”.

Why do you think Esse has an attitude problem?
I know a couple of people that know him well, they couldn’t speak higher of him, a lovely kid apparently.

Just from previous glasner quotes and actions I picked up on. In saying that Lee carsely has said esse has a good attitude.

Sure what do I know I don't know him and I'm not on the training ground every day 🤣

He came here as millwalls best player, expecting to set the world alight.
A year later he gets a couple of minutes every 5 games or so.
Hasn’t even made the bench a few games.
I’m not saying he should start if he isn’t good enough. But it’s not surprising that he appears a bit f**ked off.

It’s December, we’re fifth in the League and still in both cups… so I can’t criticise Glasner. I don’t understand his methods but there are two sides to that:

1. I don’t understand why he can’t give Uche and Esse some minutes (to save Mateta’s and Sarr’s fitness), why he is so swift to write off squad assets such as them, Holding, Rak Sakyi etc.

2. At the same time I don’t understand how he has built the team he has without bringing in more players. So many players in this squad were unproven or not the finished product when he joined or signed them.

I don’t think the two things are unconnected. I think he has a very specific system and very HIGH standards, which can be both very successful and re some players, infuriating.

Deep down he is Austrian with an Austrian mentality orders must be obeyed Holding disobeyed and got shafted , I don't think player development is his thing.

Are you thinking of any other Austrians?

I think we all know Esse will be another Sorloth, a left footed Semenyo.

If I were Steve Parish would I be thinking we should perhaps consider developing/ trying Imray and Ozoh next season (I mean arguably more but I think these stand out), perhaps either Goodman or Whitworth too (they're better than Matthews aren't they?) I'd be thinking we've invested in youth, these players are similar to players we would consider signing. If in Europe, these players help registration.
Is that at odds with Glasner generally? He said something about Ozoh already that I found a bit negative. Something like he'd be a centre back. Have I made that up? I have a vague memory of it.
Does Glasner have a kind of oven ready approach? Is it ready or not? Black and white? Would he pick players in games to develop them? I think maybe once or twice he picked a weaker team and it didn't go well. I felt the balance was wrong, personally. They weren't good line ups even on paper. I still felt he resisted it. Fair enough, he plays his strongest team. And he always wants it made better. All fair enough.
But, it isn't out business model is it? I think we wanted to develop youngsters. Polish the raw into our own Eze's or whatever. There is obviously club, ownership and manager. Manager wins, board will have to put up with stuff. Manager will ask for more. Then club kicks in. I don't think Glasner's staying. I think the club is going to have to carefully consider next season. I think it's pretty fair to say that unless we want to invest 50+ million (conservatively) we would want at least one youngster to work out. Even Esse to play more. Perhaps Imray as back up to Munoz. Perhaps Ozoh to gradually replace Hughes and Lerma. We probably want a manager who will try that. Is that Glasner?
I've certainly said too much anyway. For sure. There are obviously other factors but this seems the crux of Glasner and the future debate. The club is the club and will still be here. I've already said Glasner will go. It seems like that to me.

Like all managers he has his strengths and his weaknesses. There is no better manager in The PL when it comes to analysing the opposition and setting the team up to exploit their weaknesses. His reluctance to play anyone who hasn’t been schooled in his system or can’t be absolutely trusted to do exactly what he asks of them is a weakness given the number of fixtures we have to play. I’d like to see him take the odd risk with fringe players or younger players. His desire to treat every game as a must win rather than prioritising is a weakness given his comments about the squad.
All of that however is what makes him the manager he is and we have to accept that. My gripe with him is the fact he felt last week was an appropriate time to voice again his concern over what happened in the summer. It wasn’t helpful to the club or the team and ultimately not to him either.
