Mateta

BBC trying to claim that JP wants to leave us now
He gave a direct and honest answer when asked about extending his contract at Palace that he has yet to be offered a new contract. He added that if one is offered he would of course make a decision but is currently focused only on his form.

Hardly any indication he wants to leave. I get pretty fed up with hacks stirring up rubbish

Hopefully, his inconsistent finishing of late will put suitors off, as he is integral to our success. His link-up and hold-up play is still up there with the best forwards in the PL, plus he's a huge character. I think the easy way to highlight how bad an idea it would be to sell him is to think about how many successful strikers we've had since we were promoted back to the PL.

I suspect his upbeat character is a major part of his importance to the club. Yes, he's inconsistent but he never hides, tries to gee the crowd up and when he does score his celebration is great.

Talks stall.

Agent raises flag.

Suitors express interest (really / allegedly?).

Causes improved offer from club who know full well but hedge against the risk.

Player stays (as he always intended to).
This is definitely the process though the outcome can also be that he leaves. The next one will likely be the most lucrative of Mateta’s career, understandable that he will be hoping for good money after the goals he has scored. Parish and co will seek to get the best value they can. Hopefully they can find a compromise.

Slightly tricky age, for us, and him.

At 28 (29 in summer) this is realistically the last chance for us to get big money for him. If he wont sign a new contract the sensible option is to sell in the summer to the highest bidder.

And who is the replacement for the same money?

Nketiah seems to be doing well now. But there aren't any others coming through. Kind of replacement we've been linked with before would be Borja Mayoral, or someone like Musa (Croatian). I'm pretty sure we've scouted both.
Forgot about him, good call

I'm concerned about squad age. One or two seasons now and we'll need an entire rebuild. We'll be the West Ham of two season's time.
Funny I was thinking this the other day too. Maybe one more season in Europe and then our golden years will be behind us.

I'm hoping we don't do too much of a Southampton as in sell all our best players and not replace them properly. As much as it pains me Brighton seem to know what they are doing.

We seem to know what we are doing for now anyway. Also Steve Parish won't be around forever he must be close to retirement these days.

And didn't offer....

Nketiah was £30m
True, but we didn't have the space. We still had Edouard too (I know). We can't really buy another first choice striker whilst Mateta is here.
If you want my memory of anything, Musa thought he could do better but is in the US. That's not better. Heard Mayoral was interested. But he would need promises of playing time.
Another part of this is that Mateta didn't seem that good when he came here. Maybe we can be lucky again? But it's always a bit of a gamble with strikers.
Gareth Taylor sticks in my mind. We were happy to sign him. Excited. He often pops up in the news. Liverpool womens manager. He was never really a striker.
