Labour Party politics

A singularly revisionist and partial re-telling of history.

You clearly forget (a fact the Tories have spent years seeking to smother) that the Conservative Parliamentary Party was - along with the majority of educated Brits - vociferously Remain, including her. That was her Poison Chalice.

To have done what you suggest would have required culling the intelligent members of her party and replacing them with the seriously dumb ERG types - an act that would have certainly led to a rapid decline in administration, economy etc. May would not commit to such an act of such obvious vandalism. It would have represented a clear breach of her duty. But guess what happened next?

To claim Boris ever did the "right" thing..!
Err, what are you on about.

The single defining issue of May's government was trying to get the Brexit bill passed. Time after time she called a vote in parliament and lost partly because her own backbenchers voted against it. We were at stalemate which is what the rebel Tories wanted and she was unable to find a solution.

Johnson again tried to pass it but finally realised the only way to do it was to call an election whilst ejecting the rebels from his own party.

May failed to get Brexit through because she didn't have the balls to do what Johnson finally did. I don't call that good leadership or putting the country first.

Another one out through the revolving door.

So eight years ago this bloke and others in the Labour party played snog marry or avoid. Who the hell keeps posts like that anyway.

I can only assume that somebody had it in for this guy and before anyone says the Daily Mail, who gave them the posts?

Labour can't live up to their own standards, including the PM himself. Yet, somehow everyone is supposed to adhere by their standards or be vilified? It's getting more of a joke by the day.
I'm feeling that there's a general anger towards Labour now. I presume there's no current approval rating for Starmer?

There is. He's ahead of Macron.

Again, revisionist re-write. Eg you cant refer to a majority as "rebels".

BJ lit the fuse for wholly self-serving purposes and we have descended as a nation as a consequence.

May sought a way to avoid that at personal cost to herself. That is true public service.

That's what i am on about.

Yep, they can't.

To be honest I don't think any of them can.

The old saying, 'power corrupts, total power corrupts totally'. Everywhere you look around the world.

For the plebs in the street like us, left or right, it's 'choose your preferred arsehole'.

They are in an impossible position.

Pacify their base but turn into France.

Apply prudent fiscal policies which makes everyone hate you but will scrape them along to the next GE just about propped up by mini poppets of good news (e.g. today's AI investment announcement).

Chase Reform but alienate their base.

Too many ropes pulling in too many directions without any possibility of following any recognizable objective without cost.

They are dead man walking but don't yet know it. The ultimate pressing of the self destruct will be replacing Starmer with a feminist.

I tend to agree. However, they are not forced to continue unpopular policies. They are also supposedly able to come up with new ideas. Their hands seem to be tied by unpopular ideology as well as money. Plus still trying to be a US lackey whilst being an EU lackey. The two seem incompatible.
I can also imagine an even more unpopular Labour leader than Starmer. Which seems incredible with just how dislikeable he is.

I saw the film the Go Between. We get a messenger job.

I read the book but don't think I saw the film. I can see the guy in it but can't remember his name. The book would put you off anyway. Massively overrated.
Alan Bates and Julie Christie. The same two featured in Far from the Madding Crowd 1967 version.

They don't really have a choice due to their ideology and their base, both activist and MP.

Replacing a woman with a man is an affront to them....it's quite amusing in a way.

Labour's only real chance is to go hard down either the Reform route.....which is incredibly unlikely and would see them break up quite quickly......Or go the full Owen Jones/Corbyn fever dream, please their base to the nines and let the chips fall as they may.

Doing Tony Blair impressions just sees them losing anyway.....but they might just limp into 29....maybe.

If they go full Corbyn they will retain their original base but lose the massive middle (who got them all those seats) to the Lib Dems/Greens.

Chasing Reform makes them appear the party in opposition, completely disingenuous/ridiculous and causes them to... lose the massive middle (who got them all those seats) to the Lib Dems/Greens.

Damned if they do...
