Yeremy Pino

As the saying goes, lies, damned lies, and statistics.

I would be very pleased if Pino came good. For one thing, we've paid for him now. For another, he really does seem to try. However, he has been awful so far and seems only to be getting worse.

The stats don't tell the whole story. They don't tell you (for instance) how often Pino made a mess of a key attacking pass when it was very much on, or how often Eze played a perfectly weighted through ball only to see a palace forward misread it, or a covering defender do well. The stats deal in quantity but struggle to convey quality.

Not to suggest that Eze did everything right and Pino does everything wrong, but the slightest glimpse of Eze at 23 showed what a class act he promised to be. The ease of his first touch, his awareness, body shape, weight of pass... It was all there. We all knew straight away that we had a gem. Pino, in comparison, is plainly really struggling.

In my minds eye, I imagine him scuttling around to useful effect in a narrow right sided midfield role, like a modern Ray Houghton, but that's probably to do with how little pace and power he has rather than any sense that he can run the game from that position. If anything, he's becoming a liability when he comes into our half to collect the ball. It's gone from wondering if a different formation would unlock him to it being really hard to see where he has any possible future here.
His first few games were promising. He had confidence and showed his ability. Should and could have scored a goals or two. I think his confidence is shot - like a few others. Also not convinced he’s playing in the right position

On the left, Eberechi Eze at age 23 in the PL with Palace.
On the right, Yeremy Pino at age 23 in the PL with Palace.

Whilst there's obviously areas to improve, he's nowhere near as bad as some would have you believe.

People need to back our players.

He does try and atlease he hasn't ask to leave
Pino is nothing like as bad as some people make out. I have just watched the full 90 minutes of Wolves on the Palace app and when, if, I recover, may add my comments to the match thread.

Completely agree.

I wouldn't play him at all now, he's been sh!t and we need the points. I do however hold out hope for him to feel more settled under a new manager and perhaps with a new role, thus playing to his strengths with these shining through.

Two quite opposing thoughts there, I recognise that.

I think it is too soon to condemn Pino.

At the moment he is playing in a team with no confidence, poor ball control and abysmal movement.
True, most of his free kicks and corners are ill-judged and he gets hasselled off the ball a lot but he is a trier and he hit the post against Wolves.

Give him time with better performing players and I am sure he will come good but, if he doesn't, put him in a better team and his abilities will become obvious.

The thing that annoys me (as it does with many others in the PL) is the 'Yeremy' on his shirt - why doesn't he want 'Pino' there? Perhaps it is a rude Spanish word? I suggest that names be all First or all surnames but not a mixture of the two!

This is what I see in pino. His thought is ahead of the players. Twice he put balls in and no runners. This could even be OG safety instructions to the players but pino is not a Spain player cos he’s crap !

Those blind passes and flicks are nowhere near where they should be.

How come Wharton connects, or gets near to connecting, with his attempts then?

In Spain it's quite common to use both mother and fathers' surnames.
If that's the case, maybe he had a falling out with one of them.

Chelsea, reading and QPR may be asking similar questions about previous players !
True dat , with Olise and Eze it would have been that stepping stone club thing even with us .But we defo got use out of them .
I can't remember what was issue with Guehi and Chelsea ? Was he just unfancied at the time ?
They always seem to have surplus players , I reckon some of them just get forgotten about till an offer comes in .
Sorloth is a strange one , and the Norway thing is surprising aswell , what a generation ! Their striker options are incredible
