He has just under 2 years left of his contract and probably asked to leave - we will no doubt be doubling his salary.

Villarreal will have realised if he wasn't sold in this window they would get a lot less in the next one.

Once a player asks to leave it is difficult to keep them happy.

Surely a win win all around.

I should add for those doubting his ability, he was a first 11 player until he picked up his injury and it was only at the end of last season that he started playing to top level again. He is currently being kept out by a revitalised Pepe who is apparently on fire but was still very much part of the first team squad.

He is highly rated by their fans and that is good enough for me. One good season at Palace and we’ll be looking at another £60m player and potentially a tidy profit.

Agree we need numbers as well as quality, even if most of your list didn’t play or played just a little last season. But there’s cover needed so we must buy.

Other reason . His team have recruited players who he is having a problem displacing .

Me thinks part of the reason he’s happy to leave are commissions supposedly being paid. If he can set people close to him up for life , more power to him .

Can’t imagine other clubs don’t do it …
