Wolves vs. Crystal Palace match thread

We all love Mateta and know he can be absolutely ruthless in front of goal and I don't think it's digging him out to say he has missed a lot of big chances this season. He's still high in the PL scorer charts but genuinely could, and probably should, have had 3-4 more.

I think he's tired and once he gets his eye in will still score a hatful this season. And even missing chances, he must be a nightmare to play against.

If I'm going to be really critical of a player (after a win as well), I genuinely don't know how Devenny keeps getting minutes, even as a late sub. He's one of these players who must perform a function that pleases the manager which I'm not sophisticated enough to understand as I really don't know what he brings and can't see how he's up to the standard at all.
Agree 100% on Mateta.

I don’t think Devenny has done badly closing games out, when we were tiring and had the game won. I don’t think he has shown anything to suggest he is a number 10 when we need a goal. I’d like to see him get a game at left wing back, like he does for NI, to give Mitchell a rest. I think he has potential generally.

Yes, bits of it as streaming allowed.
Clinton Morrison on Sky said the first half was the worst he'd seen in the Premier League and was scathing of Mateta's miss, and none too complimentary about Sarr either.
It was notable that our two goals came from 'non strikers'
Looked in the rule book non strikers are allowed to score , just ours dont do it enough ,
Mateta chance good keeping closed the angle well so its more of well done the keeper , he could have done with the ball kicking up a little then he may have had a chance to lobe it .
Clinton was a lazy little sh#t when he played , great if the ball was near 6 yard box , running the only time he done running when he had a runny nose or had the sh#ts , not the first time he has said it about us as well , so your comments have no foundation

For me, this game set the alarm bells ringing. The manager taking no notice of my informed guidance, selecting random players and scraping a narrow victory against the bottom club.
What we should be doing is following Champions examples, the likes of Liverpool and Manyoo, where they totally capitulate against lower opposition.
How i yearn for yesteryear, where on a dark wet wintery evening we'd lose to Crewe by a late goal in a half-full Selhurst. That was proper football. Clinton is right.

I think JPM is suffering as the result of a raised-bar, something we’re in uncharted waters with as Palace fans.

Might do well for some of us to bear in mind it was him that raised the bar in the first place.
This! The success we have had, and continue to have, is down to the collective. All 11 on the pitch, the subs, the Manager and the staff. Even us fans. JP isn’t Haaland, but he is an integral part of a machine that works very well.

It wasn't that long ago we lost to Luton, so some progress has been made...

A solid 2-0 win and we could have scored more, didn’t see the match only the MOTD highlights. We seem to get stronger in second half’s of matches,Oliver has worked on that.Reading the comments about JP missing chances, well my take is he gets in all the right places and does so much more than hitting the back of the net. To opposing defenders he must be a massive nightmare to play against.

He will score against Strasbourg on Thursday and you know it!

Incidentally Munoz's opening goal came from a rebounded shot by Wharton on the edge of the box. Good to see Wharton taking up such a position where he can have a crack at goal, talk of him not finding the chance due to our shape and tactical master plan is nonsense - if the opportunity arises, as it did and will, then take it.

We usually always struggle after the international break, so getting the 3pts is massive. Overall a pretty scrappy game, where in the first half we couldn't find the final pass despite some decent approach play and in the second half we scored a scrappy goal slightly against the run of play. But from then on we looked very comfortable.

Sets us up nicely for what is a huge run of games in the upcoming months. With the sheer volume of fixtures I expect there'll be a few iffy performances but let's just enjoy it! Time for a few fringe players to step up and be counted, I thought Nketiah's introduction completely transformed us yesterday with his runs and energy playing a part in both goals. So hopefully more of that to come.

Mateta. Anyone on here remember Don Rogers?. Would always convert in a one-on-one situation with the keeper. So enjoyed watching his skill many years ago.
I was thinking the same thing yesterday.
Rogers would take the ball towards the keeper, sidestep him, and place the ball into the empty net.
Rogers had good control of the ball, could use both feet and had a calm head which also helped.
Largely a lost art.

Many players try and bend the ball around the keeper these days, but the execution needs to be nigh on perfect.

I must have watched a different game from most, i thought we played very well, everyone accept a tired Mateta, pick outs for me, Munoz, Pino, Wharton, Kamada, Henderson (distribution) and Richards, but its about opinions.

The master, even playing the ball one side of the keeper, running round the other side and calmly placing into an empty goal, magic

How you can include DK in the same breathe as Wharton and Munoz is literally beyond me. He was a 2/10 compared to their 8.

But in general, we weren’t bad! But let’s be honest, wolves were and are toilet.

Indeed. My main frustration with this latest JP miss is that he didn't even hit the target: he looked lost at the sight of the keeper doing his job and closing the angle and snatched at the opportunity.
If we have the playmakers to put the ball in behind (we do) then we need someone with a better one on one finishing rate. I'm sure JP is just as frustrated and perhaps this is why he is snatching at the chances.
All other aspects of his game are spot on, but this is a results business and I presume he wants to be in the French World Cup squad; he needs to be putting the majority of those excellent chances away.

Lost to Lens yesterday, didn't realise Ben Chilwell was playing for Strasbourg.
