This is what we nearly always lack though - forward planning. We always have at least one position, usually more, where we have only one decent player. I thought we might have started to change when we bought Sosa and Canvot. But we then left ourselves with other positions with obvious back up issues. As for any type of natural succession to positions, well the academy players have either been untrusted, not used or not good enough. And we haven't exactly brought in youngsters to take over older or sold player's places in a season or two. For Munoz and Mateta, for example - both could leave in the summer. We're then buying just one again who has to go straight in and perform and it all starts again. And when they get injured or don't work out/ hit a sticky patch - we have no one and have to react mid season as we are all over again now. It's pretty much deja vu. The left back one over the years was the most glaring. We've been massively lucky Mitchell is basically never injured or banned. Has to be one of the fittest and most consistent we've ever had and near the top of players in the league. Unsung springs to mind. Remember the one in the car crash (Souare or whatever his name was). What was it? No left back until PVA in the January. Where were forced to spend again.
Forward planning/ succession planning would have dealt with this. It wouldn't always work but it has to be the way. My opinion is you need two decent players in every position. That's 22. Then 3 other players who can cover injuries with some youngsters when you need them. The caveat is that rotation is needed, however, or you end up with Esse. Who looked good on his debut but didn't get much of a look in for a good while. Makes it pointless buying them if you don't try them. As many and myself have said, there was no guarantee when we brought in AWB. He was not massively outstanding at youth level. Yet he worked straight away. Others who shine at youth level clearly don't work. It's a difficult process but I think you can quite quickly see if it's a player who will hack it. I think we've seen a couple this season and I hope and trust Glasner noticed. Drakes-Thomas, Benamar and King look like they have something about them. I'm not saying play them all (although I would against Macclesfield) but they should start getting on the pitch at 60 mins.
We have quite a lot of older players when you look at it. We're storing up future issues if we don't act preemptively and get promising players in even when we have a no. 1 in a position. Plus, that clearly creates competition and negates favouritism towards certain players. Mateta and Pino should be dropped right now on current form. They should get their form back in reserves games and our back ups should get a chance. We can't do it for the obvious reason we don't have the back up.
Guehi isn’t going to be with us next season and we really should have a plan for that given we’ve known jt for a long time. We can’t replace like for like as there isn’t anyone that good who would come here but we should have a plan.Looking through the squad we do have quite a lot of upcoming decisions to make:
Guehi - gone in the summer, ideally we sell him in this window for £20+
Clyne - out of contract in the summer, will be released surely
Munoz - will be 30 in the summer, might want to sell whilst the value is still there
Lerma - out of contract in the summer, good utility player, will be offered a new deal you'd assume
Kamada - out of contract in the summer, IMO vital to our style of of play. Needs renewing or replacing
JMP - entering last year of contract, 29 come the summer, last window to get a decent fee
I'd ideally sell Guehi this window. And sell Munoz and JP in the summer.
But as you said, I'd like to be getting some of those replacements in now if possible.
.... a back up goalkeeper instead. 🤣🤣🤣Guehi isn’t going to be with us next season and we really should have a plan for that given we’ve known jt for a long time. We can’t replace like for like as there isn’t anyone that good who would come here but we should have a plan.
JPM we should cash in on if we get a sensible fee. He’s been great overall but isn’t irreplaceable.
Munoz we should hold onto for as long as we can. I increasingly think he is the most important player we have, especially in the current system. If OG goes and a new manager plays with conventional full backs he becomes less indispensable.
The worry for me is centre midfield. Good chance Wharton goes, Kamada and Lerma out of contract. Don’t see Kamada signing a new contract if OG leaves. We potentially need 3 players there so I full expect us to sign a back up goalkeeper instead

Main current concern for The Board coupled with confirming Glasner's future whom we ideally want to hold onto but how comfortable he is with present planning?Looking through the squad we do have quite a lot of upcoming decisions to make:
