Wilfried Zaha return

SJ is friends with Wilf he will always take his side.

No he didn't keep us in the league people need to stop claiming this it's something the media made up it's a team sport.

More nonsense about laying foundations for others.

Why should Mateta thank him for what? him taking the p**s out of him.

Mateta -
Prem Games - 138Goals 43Assists 9

Zaha
Prem Games - 291Goals 68Assists 30
This is a ridiculous comparison for so many reasons.

Wilf quite clearly has an attitude issue, but he was undoubtably a high quality player in a generally weak Premier League team for us. He carried us almost singlehandedly for years. He remains the best Palace player I have seen (been going since 2000).

Here's an AI overview to the question in response to 'Palace stats with and without Zaha':

Crystal Palace's performance statistics have historically shown a significant drop-off when Wilfried Zaha is absent, as seen in a 2018 analysis where Palace lost every game in the ten matches he didn't start and averaged significantly fewer goals. More recent analyses from 2023 also confirm this trend, noting that the team struggled with ambition and was defeated in 15 of the last 17 games Zaha missed. While Zaha's presence boosted performance, it's important to note this older data reflects a specific period in the team's history.

Performance with Zaha

  • Win percentage: 41.4% of games won with Zaha in the starting XI.
  • Goal-scoring: Averaged 1.48 goals per game.
  • Defense: Conceded fewer goals when Zaha was on the pitch.

Performance without Zaha

  • Losses: Lost all ten games in a specific ten-game period when he didn't start.
  • More recent trends: In a more recent 2020 analysis, 15 losses were recorded in the last 17 Premier League games without him, indicating a continued struggle when he was out.
    • Goal-scoring: Averaged 0.4 goals per game.
    • Confidence and ambition: The team was described as lacking ambition and conviction without him.

Historical context
  • These statistics highlight the significant impact Zaha had on the team's performance and confidence.
  • It's important to remember that these stats are from specific periods and do not reflect the team's performance with its current lineup and post-Zaha era.

Yep.
Football fans are notoriously fickle, but Palace fans dismissing Wilf's fundamental role in our success just a couple of years after his departure wasn't on my bingo card.

Zaha was very good, like you say in a poor premier league side.
But he don’t make my best eleven. Wingers/wide midfielders
Salako, Lombardo, Olise all better for me.
Central strikers wright, Bright, Armstrong, AJ, Murray JPM all miles in front.
Just my opinion though.

Resorting to using Ai is ridiculous and lazy.

Those stats are misleading the claims we only won games with him well yes because he played almost every game look how many we lost when he played as well.

Another response said mateta and wilf not same type of player i agree but remember wilf wanted to be a striker and was for last few seasons

you rose tinted spec people are ridiculous (yes he contributed to Palace not saying he didnt but the claims about he was some super star and 1 man team is complete BS)
Wilf did play as a striker for the last 2-3 seasons with us because he didn't like the media kept going on about he doesn't score enough goals but even his assist record isn't the best

Spot on.

Whilst Wilf in his prime was a superb player it really is utter crap and very disingenuous to perpetuate the myth that ‘he kept us up’ for all those years. It’s also extremely disrespectful to the other players who more than played their part.

It’s generally the same nonsense spouted by people who said we would get relegated without him and also who repeatedly told us that Roy Hodgson was the only manager who could possibly keep us in the Premier League.

Whilst Zaha was a wonderful player for us and a vital cog in the wheel it is a team sport and one has to give credit to the others who also played pivotal roles in ensuring that we remained in the PL.
