Why didnt mateta take penalty vs Newcastle

I am no stato. But hasn’t he taken them all past 2 seasons. And scored them all? Then there was OG criticism of him at Citeh..strange mood among players last night. Eze looked like he’d never taken a penalty in his life. Are there rumours of behind scenes falling out/implosion? OG looked absolutely shell shocked after and during game . Similar tonkings ahead vs Bournemouth and the arse unless something different and better is tried. Awful prep for a cup semifinal
I've had exactly the same thoughts. Mateta (despite a great run of form and sacrificing an ear for the club) appears to be out of favour with the management, and that whole team performance last night felt just weird. As for Eze's penalty, we all knew in advance he was going to place it rather than hit it and that Pope would almost certainly save it, so what the hell was Glasner doing letting him take it?

What do you base this statement on?

The dilemma for England fans was who to support but when Argentina's constant disgusting, disgraceful behaviour emerged, we all started eating cheese and felt like surrendering. Martinez was at the fore - but it was the whole team. Presumably compensating for being a weak nation.
Martinez is still no different. If we get a penalty in the semi final, he will without doubt psyche out our taker

Just a feeling. That half-time substitution at City, with no striker on the bench, made no sense and doesn't chime with Glasner's professed attacking philosophy. Others on here reckon Mateta had been having a go at Glasner's boy Kamada for giving away that free kick. Maybe that continued at half-time? Or maybe I'm adding 2 and 2 and making 5. In any event, something feels wrong.

I agree that the substitution was odd given the nature of that particular game, but it's a leap of faith to suggest there's been some kind of falling out without firm evidence. Disagreements happen all the time in the workplace. One has to get on with it.

I wonder if OG has upset a few with his comments after the City game, especially his criticism of JP and what I thought was over the top criticism of our defending when you take into account that it was our first bad performance since probably Arsenal before Christmas!!

Maybe Mateta’s mask is a distraction and they decided before hand he wouldn’t take any pens? I know it didn’t look that way when he buried that early chance against Brighton, but that was an instinctive strike, he didn’t have time to think.

Perhaps they didn't want to risk him getting earache if he missed?

I feel like our players don't respond well to criticism 😅

Glasner said post match that Eze and Mateta were the designated penalty takers and they determined between themselves who would take a penalty in a given game.
Glasner also added that Eze usually scores from penalties in training games.

Neither look convincing to my mind and looking at the rest of options in our squad I just hope that the Villa game doesn’t go to penalties.

I believe that A.Villa have had 4 current players taking penalties this season, Watkins, Tielemans, Asensio and Rashford. Emi Martinez in goal has an excellent record of saving penalties.

I do not envisage the game going to a penalty shoot-out, I believe that A.Villa will emerge victorious before any need for spot kicks.

We are screwed if it goes to penalties against villa.
Chance would be a fine thing! We are already screwed. Our goal difference in past 4 games reads -8 and I expect it to worsen on Saturday and definitely on Wednesday.
If by some miracle it comes to pens at Wembley Eze must be withdrawn before the 120th minute.
The manager is quoted as 'Eze usually scores penalties IN TRAINING' There is a huge difference Mr G.

Can you head a penalty in? Maybe Lacroix could use smaller players like a golf club and swing them at the ball? Just ideas for a shootout.
Rather worryingly the FA instructions include this information:

The player taking the penalty kick must kick the ball forward; backheeling is permitted provided the ball moves forward.
Presumably for those for whom a Panenka just isn't flash enough.

No look, random back heel - has Eze written all over it. My guess is that someone has back heeled it before - and scored.
