Watching Forest v Liverpool worries me that Forest are so much better than us at the moment. I do feel for Sage as surely he won't be happy with his best players being sold without him being able to do anything about it. Feel it's going to be a long season, why do we always make it so difficult for ourselves.

In fairness Forest seemed to have absorbed Glasner's coaching methods quickly based on this game.

It's like watching a Glasner Palace team when the tactics worked.

Liverpool can get back into the game, but will have to stop playing into Forest's hands.

My take is that this the Parish norm - just does business too late.

Which leads to have us having a slow start to the season - it’s happened time after time, season after season and window after window.

Look Parish is our most successful Chairman - that cannot be disputed. But his dealings in the windows are just too slow.

I have no doubt we will see another CB and a CDM coming in over the next couple of days.

But we have known that need for weeks - so why the delay.

Upshot starts like this.

On a positive front think some of the new signings look really promising - I like Khalalli - Tomiyasso and Mangueza.

Once it all settles down - which now will be after the International window - we will be fine.

Once Sage - some of the football has been good - so sure he will be fine.

But again - we’ll be playing catch up and it could be avoided if we business that needed to be done was done sooner.

You just need to accept it for what it is, the club is not and will never spend big in the summer. The owners want to protect their investment and all they need to do is ensure we remain in the Premier league. Why risk it all for a chance of maybe finishing in the top 8.

we will see how the season plays out and spend what we need to in january. If we're in the bottom 3, the manager is gone, atleast they know they can back the new manager financially. If we're hovering and not playing too badly, they will keep Sage and back him in jan.

He secured a 4th place finish for Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga, he won the 'Europa League' with Eintracht Frankfurt and in the 'Champions League' they finished 2nd in their group stage.

I have a proclivity to keep tags on managers abroad. Well before we appointed Sage, I mentioned the name of 'Matthias Jaessle' on HOL and I suspect he was unknown to the vast majority on this esteemed site. Jaessle of course is now Newcastle manager.

I had to read this again to understand the point the og poster is making and then put it in some sort of context. I think it expresses a frustration that we have never kicked on after putting together a promising side. But then I think to myself that for the current period we have been in the Premiership we have been a below mid table team probably punching above our weight making the league look like a genuine competition when it reality it's totally fixed for the big spenders. Yes we put together a decent side that went on a run of cup games and actually won the thing for the first time in our history, followed by a shield and a mickey mouse Euro trophy. All good stuff in the long run and something for the history books. But the inevitability is that success at a club like Palace brings the attention of the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and in the end money talks. Football is constructed to make the £££$$$ and keep the merry-go-round turning. We are but a small cog in the apparatus.
I agree that player acquisition and scouting needs to be improved but it's not so easy to put together a side that can compete effectively at this level. I'm thinking of Villa and Newcastle doing well and then seeing their teams dismantled. It's how the system works. There's no entitlement that says we should be here and so any level we have reached needs to be maintained and should it start to erode then we can expect to be fighting relegation.
The moral of the story is hold the position you have and don't weaken it with ill advised sales and poor purchases.

Who's let you down? We've won 3 trophies in 2 seasons, and now have a season in the Europa league to look forward too. We've been in the prem for a decade and are building the new stand that everyone said wouldn't happen.

We're also watching every other 'successful' club get dismantled (Newcastle, Villa etc) but so far have only sold 1 of our stars for market value.

Olise who had a release clause in his contract ? Eze, same ? Guehi who openly said he wouldn't sign another contract ??

Selling Lacroix was an unexpected blow especially in the absence of a replacement.

Munoz, much as I like him, if we get £20m for him then I think that's good business - and this time we do have a replacement.

Mateta and Sarr are being influenced by their agents but in the case of Sarr, the club so far are holding firm - as indeed they have with the supposed approach for Wharton.

I agree with most of this but up top we look very lightweight. Throughout the team we look less threatening.

Powder puff goal threat is a distinguishing characteristic of relegation teams.

Take JPM (multiple attempts to engineer a move away) and Sarr (lots of chat which may or may not have substance) out of the equation and it is difficult to see where the goals are going to come from. Even if JPM stays, he has become less and less clinical with the chances the team has made over the last half season.

We swapped McNeil for Johnson. No matter how pony you thought Johnson was for us, or is generally, the facts are he has a goal every 4 games goal ratio over his career before he came to us, and he scored just under 20 goals in 50 odd games as Spurs won the Europa League. He is already off the mark at Everton.

McNeil's goal return is more like 1 in 10 over his whole career.

If widespread speculation is correct we are about to offload Munoz who offers our main threat out wide. Whilst early days, his replacements are (1) likely already in the squad and (2) unlikely be as threatening as Munoz in the opposition half, even if they are better defenders.

If Strand Larsen, Nketiah or someone else comes up trumps then no problem we'll be fine for the reasons you mention.

But for me this is a worryingly increasing "if", even when the stats like XG paint an optimistic picture for this team based on the first two games.

Totally agree. Both games were always going to be tough ones to get anything from. Had JP taken his sleeping mask off it would have been a different story against Everton. With him and Sarr last night we may have got a result. The signings we've made are good ones. Half the players against City aren't fully up to speed yet and haven't played together and are from different leagues. Several debuts and Sage trying to find his best eleven. Looked good in places against a multi multi million side. Once he starts with the CBs in the right positions ie Richards not in the centre, Disasi in the centre and Canvot on the other side, which he put right later on, and we hopefully add another CF and MF and the new lads bed in, we'll have a pretty decent squad. So many gloom and doom merchants as usual. It's 2 games FFS, both difficult ones. He's a good manager.Yep agree Mr Palaceman "give it a chance"

Let’s also remember we are, probably, 3 weeks behind most teams, when pre-season.
