War in Ukraine

They exist.

Obama being the most recent example.
ROFL!

The most overrated in history. Wtf did he actually do aside speak very well?

He f***ed ISAF in Afghanistan, openly telling McCrystal he could have X troops for X time. So the Taliban hid and waited it out

He also misjudged Trump and was the catalyst for his rise to power. That speech he did, mocking him, just watch. That was the moment Trump went for it A stupid misjudgement.

So yeah, you can rim Obama all day but he is why Trump is here now.

I just read this response, so apologies for it being so late. It’s important though.

It says much more about the politics of Grok and those who use it for “information” than ever it does about the truth. It’s far from “some guy in Cornwall” who disagrees! So does Ukraine, the United Nations and NATO.

I asked ChatGPT the same question. This was the response:-

“The events in Ukraine in 2014 are sometimes described as a civil war, but this label is highly contested and often considered inaccurate or misleading, depending on the perspective and political context.

What happened in 2014?
  1. Euromaidan and Government Overthrow (Feb 2014):
    • Mass protests in Kyiv led to the ousting of pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych.
    • The new pro-Western government took over in Kyiv.
  2. Russian Annexation of Crimea (March 2014):
    • Russia occupied and annexed Crimea following an unrecognized referendum.
    • Widely condemned as illegal by Ukraine and most of the international community.
  3. War in Donbas (April 2014 onward):
    • Armed conflict broke out in eastern Ukraine (Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts), where Russia-backed separatists declared independence.
    • The Ukrainian government responded with military action.
    • Russia provided substantial support to separatists, including weapons, fighters, and at times direct military involvement.

Was it a civil war?

Arguments for calling it a civil war:

  • Ukrainian citizens on both sides were involved.
  • It began with local unrest and protests that escalated to armed conflict.
  • There was genuine dissatisfaction in some eastern regions with the new Kyiv government.

Arguments against calling it a civil war:

  • Russia played a central and active role in organizing, supplying, and directing the separatist forces.
  • The leadership of the so-called “people’s republics” included many Russian nationals.
  • The conflict is widely viewed as a form of hybrid warfare or proxy war, with Russia exploiting internal divisions.
  • The Ukrainian government and most Western governments describe it as foreign aggression, not a civil war.

Conclusion:

Most experts, including the United Nations, NATO, and Ukrainian authorities, do not classify the conflict as a civil war. Instead, they characterize it as a Russian-instigated and supported armed conflict in eastern Ukraine.

So while the term “civil war” has been used—often in Russian or pro-Russian narratives—it is not an accurate or neutral description of what happened.”

Russian and pro-Russian narratives? Says it all, doesn’t it?
Crimea is much more complicated TBH. Most Crimeans considered themselves Russians and were incredibly upset when they got hived off to Ukraine in the 90s just because they were in the administrative region of Ukraine. They appealed to go back to being part of Russia which was rejected by the early Ukraine government. Close ties between Ukraine and Russia softened the blow including Russian naval ports in Crimea. When 2014 happened and Russia realised the geographical consequences of a hostile Crimea though, they took it over. The West and Ukraine can invalidate the 91% poll for Crimeans to come back to Russia, but beyond doubt the majority considered themselves Russian in language and loyalties rather than a pro-western west Ukraine approach.

Other opinions exist.

Give me the decency, ethics and leadership of Obama over the chaos and dishonesty of Trump every time.

I understand that but there was a way to protect their interests and culture, alongside continuing access to the ports, without invading. Putin has never accepted the existence of Ukraine as a nation state and this was the first concrete evidence of his intentions.

The response from the west was weak and based on appeasement. Which never works with bullies.

Indeed, the Crimean war and WW2 loom large in the history of the peninsula. Both central to the existence of a greater Russia. Crimea was always going to be a stumbling block. I have a feeling that it's the most central part of what Russia wants.

That's true originally, back in 2014 the whole thing could have been resolved like that.

However, now after hundreds of thousands of deaths no one is going to give an inch on ground already taken. Perhaps with full sanction relief Ukraine can get some ground back, probably in the north but I doubt it.

The stupidity of not closing this war back in 2022 looms larger every day.

Currently it looks like Russia are gearing up to take two cities this summer.
