The VAR confirmed the lino flagged for Halland not the Argie so the on field decision was wrong so couldn't stand .
VAR had to then look at the 'goal' as they do with any other for anything amiss
Where they went wrong was deciding a subjective decision on whether the Argie was interfering with play
As they correctly admitted they should have told the ref to look at the monitor to make the decision on any interference not what they did do in telling the ref the goal was good
Those were the facts of the matter .

Its subjective whether he put the defender off . Martinez of course is going to say he was but its debatable .
The keeper had a better claim of interference as he dived for the non header and was in no place to attempt to save the Halland shot . Again debatable but would likely have seen the ref side with utd

I'm not going to give anyone a history of my time and roles in the game but yes I understand it quite well ,especially the part that says Utd get the tight calls and soft decisions at home so I'm still giving the goal if only for reasons of Karma 😉

VAR needs throwing out of our game ,the offside law needs returning to the days when the lino flagged for players in offside positions ,they rarely got it wrong .

If you are standing in the middle of the goal area and are inches away from getting a touch on the ball you are interfering with play. Surely there can be no debate.

I did wonder if your early comment might be an anti Man U wind up, but it appears not.

The shocking thing for me is that Webb has just admitted the VAR never even considered if the little Argentine whinger was offside, they merely looked at whether he had touched the ball.

You would think decisions couldn't possibly be any worse than the last couple of seasons. Yet, they are.

They've managed to make it look like blatant cheating. Which had a bit more of a gray area about it before.

The cynic in me says that Man City will get a meaningless points deduction as they will have so many points, they'll still be in the Champions League. As that's about all that matters.

Thats the issue , with the ever changing tinking with the rules it HAS become a debate .

Just to be clear the offside law states you can be in an offside position but are only penalised on becoming involved in active play if

You touch the ball..........................cleared of that one

Interfering with an opponent by
Preventing an opponent from playing the ball ....................cleared of that one as well ,the goalkeeper wasn't getting it and nor was Martinez . His argument that he decided to try and get to Enzo and left Halland isn't a consideration in the law .

Challenging an opponent for the ball .............Nope ,cleared of that as well ,Enzo flung himself for the header ,Martinez was a yard behind Enzo probably didn't even know Martinez was there

Clearly attempting to play the ball which is close and impacts on an opponent ..............Subjective . There are a couple of others but this one is the only part of the law thats up for debate . Being in the middle of the goal is not considered under the law .

So did Enzos action impact on what the goalkeeper did ?

You could argue that it didn't , the natural action for the goalkeeper is to follow the ball as it crossed in front of him ,putting his hands up or diving when following the ball is hardly an unusual goalkeeping action .(see Pickford) Take Enzo completely out of the picture and would the goalkeeper have acted any different ?

Or you could argue it did .
But maybe its not as clear cut as some have commented ,but as previously mentioned if VAR had done what they were supposed to do and tell the ref to go to the monitor there would be no debate whatever was decided .
