I think the microscopic analysis on TV , with slo-mo and lines being drawn over the stopped action, have pushed VAR into being used. Plus the punditry from ex-players, all of whom used to cheat by going to ground, as "they earned the right to do so". Or intimidating the ref, or wasting time.
Probably better to bin VAR in the long run, as that's still subject to human error, but also destroys the flow of the game.
