US Politics

Some seem incapable of understanding that if a mugger gets a victim to give them what they want by agreeing to only punch them once instead of three times they are still a mugger.

If you are that victim should you be pleased? You’ve still been mugged. Your likely response is to try to avoid it happening again by cutting as much contact and reliance as possible. You sweet talk the mugger to keep them off your case but build contacts elsewhere. New alliances working together can stand up to muggers.
Cornish muggers must be a different breed. Good luck sweet talking most of them.

If trump can save his people money then why not. We pay a tenner per item that the yanks pay ten times more for. What would you consider a good thing or if it was the old kiddy sniffer not trump it would be a winner I guess. Your TDS in full flow.
Once you engage with the trolls it gives them oxygen.

The TDS rants used to be slightly amusing posts from a clearly deluded contrarian, that gets boring after a while

Don’t be silly!

It’s the policy which is going to hurt us and that would be condemned whoever proposed it. The fact that only Dim Donald comes up with these kind of ideas is just par for his course. No other President, Republican or Democrat, would have done this.

If you are happy to see us having to pay 10 times more for our drugs, which is much more likely than the Americans paying 10 times less, with all the consequences for the already struggling NHS, then good for you. Thank goodness for the India deal! We can buy more generics from them.

Because he’s rowed back on some of his nonsense like was always going to happen?
Most of us with common sense knew it was only temporary and they would be rolled back sooner of later.

We all said this from the beginning. And we all said the markets would rebound. It happens a lot quicker than expected 😃

They'll still be making enough to rub along with.

You miss the point.

If forcing prices down in the US forces prices up in the UK then this is bad news. For us!

As most here only seem concerned about what happens to us, why celebrate a potential win somewhere else?

They haven’t though been “rolled back”.

Trump has folded under pressure and reduced the levels for 90 days. Levels that had reached the point of effectively stopping trade completely. Nothing was being shipped and I have no doubt he was told that unless some relief was offered there was going to be a huge problem.

The tariffs are still there. Just not so big, for the moment. So the stock market breathes a sigh of relief and the speculators make a fortune, selling what they bought low.

Nothing fundamental has changed.

So we can give to immigrants arriving by boat over here with hotels and food and doctors etc and suck up having less to help them the poor loves (paraphrasing you that is) but when it is to help our friends in the states it’s just wrong. Our prices won’t rise dramatically if at all, and if you believe R and D is needed constantly on older drugs then more fool you. This is Parma’s excuse when you read between the lines. If your standards were not double you would have none. Your TDS is getting extremely bad, you need help wissie!

Yes obviously a Trump master stroke. How clever of you guys to know.
I must remember that doing something stupid and then undoing it is a really clever move.

Like it or not Trump's, or any US president's, responsibility is to the American people. They are paying about X5 what we are for the same pharmaceuticals.

We called the rollback and rebound of the markets because we know his moves deliver. It's straight out of the Trump playbook.

Stupid is the last thing this rollback is.

Looks like the economic disasters you were predicting won't be happening.

I'm shocked....shocked.

You getting the economics wrong....

Not being able to see anything other than what your lefty websites tell you.

Who'd have thunk it.

GOOD I currently pay about $127.00 a month for eye drops & for the record I can afford to pay it, but there are countless 10s of 1000s of people who struggle with prescription fees.
Even something as common as a bottle of Advil which probably cost 50/60p in the UK is 7/8 Bucks here.
if we can get the cost of these prescriptions or over the counter drugs down by half then that is a win, win.

You are aware he knows everything trump does is wrong. Eye drops; that is 100 quid. Ffs over here they are over the counter for about a fiver. I feel for you guys and I’m sure trump will be good for your pockets. Haters will always hate I’m afraid!

What on earth has our problem with asylum seekers got to do with Trump adopting policies that could hurt us? I have read some weird attempts here to link immigration with unrelated things but this really beats me!

How this plays out depends on how the drug companies respond but if they decide to raise prices elsewhere rather than cut them in the USA, which seems very likely to me, then we will be hurt. For sure we are not going to benefit.

R&D is not done on old drugs! It’s done to produce new drugs, the vast majority of which never get to market but must still undergo years of expensive trials. It’s the profit on the old drugs which pays for the new.

I would oppose anything like this whoever proposed it. Let the responsible purchasing authorities do their job and negotiate the deals with the drug companies. Just telling them we want the same deal as the lowest anyone else has negotiated is both lazy and unrealistic. Every company has marketing strategies that can sometimes involve setting prices lower than elsewhere in order to establish a presence in a market. That’s just part of capitalism. Trump is rejecting free market economics in favour of state controlled economics. He’ll publish a little red book soon.

My wife is a specialist eye nurse!

Simple eye drops are cheap, but not all eye drops are simple. Over the counter eye drops, not being on prescription, will be simple. Prescription drugs are unlikely to be.

Whether people in the USA benefit, or not, is not the point I am making. It’s the potential knock on effect on us, never mind that which the developing world might suffer.

Americans appear not to either realise this or not care if they do. I do.

Of course it is! Nobody questions that.

What is questioned is the inability to see beyond the immediate and find the long term strategies that will ensure their country prospers. Isolating themselves from the rest of the world and destroying alliances forged over centuries by behaving like playground bullies is not in anyone’s long term interests. Theirs included.

If you want to negotiate lower drug prices then negotiate. With the pharma companies! Why are they higher! You don’t impose prices. Just imagine if the drug companies decided not to supply at those prices because the cost of marketing is so much higher in the USA.

I never had you down as selfish but hey a new thing learned every day!

In 2021 the average cost of prescriptions for Americans was $1,432 per person. When it's estimated that a third of Americans can't afford their prescribed medication how much do you expect them to care what happens in other countries?
