US Politics

Obama and Clinton both lost mid terms. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I think the mid term results come into force from January? Wonder if loads of bills will be rushed through between now then?

Trump 's position as President is the same as it was two years ago, very little changes with a new congress because of how the US system is designed. The only thing you are going to see is the bi-weekly impeachment of Trump and Hegseth which will end up going no where but will be done purely for political theater.

You need a two-thirds majority to override a Presidential veto, that is why things rarely get done unless the President's party has that two-thirds majority in Congress. There are rare exceptions to that, such as second term Clinton, but that is usually driven by the ability to make a deal that works for both parties and that won't be happening any time soon.

What he isn't going to be is a lame duck as the Executive powers allow him a fair amount of leeway, especially when it comes to diplomacy. He's issued 292 Executive Orders so far in his second term and I'll be shocked if he doesn't get over 500 before his term is up.
Annie Andrews your new Senator.

Historically, the president’s party has lost an average of 26 seats in the House in 19 of the last 21 midterm elections going back to 1946. The only two exceptions were Clinton in 1998 and Bush in 2002.

There won't be a rush to get bills passed because the Republicans don't have the numbers to get them through. While they technically have a slim majority, it includes a bunch of anti-Trumpers who are going to blame him for their losses so they won't be in a rush to help him out.

January 3rd they are sworn in.

He will be massively impacted. Executive orders can be challenged and overturned by Congress. Using “Emergency Powers” as an excuse can be terminated by Congress thus voiding any order given under them. He has leeway over foreign policy but Congress declares war, not the President.

He, and many of his sycophants, will face investigations. Which will tie up their time and limit their activities. Impeachment won’t be attempted again unless a successful outcome is quietly negotiated first. Which, according to some informed opinion I have listened to, isn’t as far fetched as it might appear. Republican Sentators will increasingly want, and need, to distance themselves from Trump and MAGA, so abandoning the sinking ship and blowing holes in on the way out could be in their best interest. With the numbers as they look like being it won’t take more than a handful to reach the needed 2/3rds majority.

Executive Orders cannot be overturned by Congress, that is done by the Supreme Court and the judicial system. When Trump's administration has been dumb about it, it has been overruled by the courts. When his team actually did their homework on it, the courts let it go as they are currently during with Canada.

The challenge with removing Presidential authorities is that both parties have a belief that they will win the next Presidential election and don't want to give away a tool that they may want.

The last time the US declared war was June of 1942. Bonus points if you know who they declared it against. Hint, all three are part of NATO. What we may see is a repel of the 2001 Congressional Authorization, which has given multiple presidents carte blanche to do what they wanted to in the Middle East.

He absolutely will get congressional inquiries (technical term for congressional investigations). But trying to charge the Executive ends up being waste of time because of Executive privilege and his ability to pardon everyone for any federal crime they are accused of. I expect we will see the bi-weekly impeachment of Trump and Hegseth. But since nothing else is going to get done other then budget continuing resolutions and naming post officers, it gives Congress something to do.

The Republicans are going to have a Come to Jesus over the next two years in the run up to 2028 and trying to figure out who they want to be. Trump will continue to make it about him and it will be interesting to see if his staff can limit the damage he causes to the Republican Party or does his burning desire to make everything about himself cause them damage into 2028. My guess is that he cannot help himself and that 2028 will be about how the Republican candidates can separate themselves from him while trying to keep MAGA support.

The cost of fuel affects so much more than the price of filling up the car though - it is the key driver in the global inflation that we are experiencing, through significantly increased manufacturing and transportation costs leading to much higher prices across the board.

Trump’s decision to attack and start a war with Iran has directly led to increased costs for all of us and, in my opinion, having his Republican party take a battering is good news for us all (with the exception of Trumps mates in Russia).

All of which I can buy into except for the fact I suspect if Trump had not been President, they would still have attacked Iran.

But its all moot. I don't vote myself these days and am starting to despise 'democracy' so probably need to stay out of any electoral discussions.

No worries, 99.99% of Americans wouldn't know either. That also wouldn't know that the last time the UK declared war was in January of 1942 (Siam).

The Declaration of War political routine is one of the best illustrations of politics. Both parties despise it and talk about getting rid of it when the other side is in power but then defend it like their daughter's virginity when it is their party in power. The best chance for the 2001 authorization to go away will be next year, but we'll see what happens when the Democrats come into office and determine how they want to play this as the different fractions start positioning for what they think they deserve.

What about where your tax goes?

I earn money. I pay the tax. If I could swerve it, I happily would. Its just a fact of life. And again, my vote makes no difference.

The last Tory PM who tried to cut tax was Lizz Truss. She was then kicked out of office by....them. A prime example of why voting achieves nothing.

Pretty sure they wouldn't.

Israel had been knocking on the door of president after president who all respectfully declined assistance (save the vast bung the USA still mysteriously pays Israel every year).

His decision to directly assist Israel was not caused by any new evidence on nuclear ambitions; but there appears a curious connection between massive $ donations by an Israeli couple into Trump's election campaign fund that may have helped; and maybe the pillow talk of his Jewish wife? His government is so murky and corrupt it is hard to see the facts from the conspiratorial fiction.

I am sure we will learn the real reason for this campaign over the coming years. Initially, through the testimony of misc. low fruit aids and flunkies. Ultimately, after Trump leaves office, from the man himself.

Meanwhile, the Democrats would be idiots to go against him direct before the general election. Every time he opens his mouth, there's another X thousand Democrat votes right there. After all, Starmer won a landslide by largely keeping his mouth shut.

Nothing wrong with cutting tax if it can be done effectively.

Everything wrong with cutting tax in the way she tried, which had the City giving her a proper kick in.

Which I guess is your point.

That's an interesting fact about Siam. I didn't know that either.

Although completely irrelevant as we can hardly suggest the US hasn't been to war since. Most of it done that way as they didn't win in any sense of the word. Although there will be no admittance of any loss.
Absolutely but it would be a belter in the wipe out round of a pub quiz.

The US has a track record of achieving its actual goal for going to war and then creating a whole new reason for staying after they have achieved their goal that it has no hope of actually achieving with the political will available at the time for extended stays.
