US Politics

When the prosecutors were gunning for DT, there were pages and pages of outrage at abuse by the criminal justice system for politically motivated prosecutions etc. (and not all, I accept, without some justification).

Now DT is going hell for leather to bring what he openly admits to being retaliatory prosecutions against those who went for him. This includes conspiring to sack any prosecutor (who will, quite rightly, not touch the charges with a barge pole) and replacing them with lawyers who have no criminal law experience but who are aligned to his cause and will do whatever he tells them to do.

This from a man who complained that the prosecutions against him were (wait for it) "politically motivated"

😗

I am not sure it is possible to get a more blatant abuse of power as this weaponizing the criminal justice system for personal causes. In this country you have to go back to the Tudor Monarchs and before.

Yet no comment on here. Perhaps my mentioning it will result in me being accused of "victim blaming"?

Would have thought the key word here is "retaliatory". They went for him now he's going for them. Whether he's right to do that is another matter but did anyone expect any other response?

Venezuelan politician María Corina Machado wins Nobel peace prize

I love it.

🙂🙂

A soy boy would. Like Sports Personality of the Year they HAD to pick a woman. And she's done f*** all.

Of course you don't want Trump to win, that would go against a lot of your claims, and you don't really want peace in Gaza because that means not being able to have a pop at the Jews

Eric Trump lays out why the Trump administration is coming for its enemies in a way that never happened in Trump's first term.

All predicted.....the Democrats are now whining, when they were warned about what they were doing at the time....but as the left always seem to do, they can't help but bet it all on red.....and then cry victim when black turns up.

Well, it ended on black and hell's coming with it.

The Democrats are finding out that double downing can be done by your enemies as well and that escalation is a double edged sword.

Isn't it the normal operation in American politics anyway? Democrats and Republicans usually go for after each other don't they?
My comment was the reaction on here depending on your politics.

Thus see Stirlingsays comment above.

Democrats - political motivated malice.

Republicans - justified retaliation and you reap what you sow.

Actually both are equally abuses of power and both are clearly wrong.

I was involved in elections for many years. The public would often ask why we still use paper ballots and pencils, well you have your answer.

I suppose it is possible to commit fraud with paper ballots (stuff the ballot box) but it would require a conspiracy of multiple election officials and all the major parties turning a blind eye. There are many checks and balances to ensure it doesn't happen like that and the parties have observers who will scrutinise the whole process.

Electoral fraud in this country is low and mainly related to postal ballots.

So why use a pencil? Can't that be erased by someone? Well yes but I think that would be pretty obvious and where would they do it? At the polling station? I think people might notice and the ballot boxes are sealed.

The people who run the elections are mainly Joe public so to do a fraud like that you would need the co-operation of your randomly picked colleagues.

The reason we use a pencil is actually practical. If you use a pen you have to fold the ballot paper and if the ink is still wet your cross maybe transposed to another part of the ballot. In effect you will have spiled your paper unwittingly.

In summary the paper and pencil method works any fraud happens away from election day.

All bs more like.

The Democrats did NOT go after Trump! That’s just another of his BIG LIES which, because he repeats them so often, can become accepted as the truth. We need to see beyond the rhetoric.

The law came after Trump. As it should after all criminals, but especially those who hold the kind of power that Trump does.

Trump though is using the Justice Department, openly and unapologetically, to go after those who did their jobs in ways that affected him personally. Some, such as Comey and Bolton, are Republicans. Some of the charges are so obviously nonsensical that no one ought defend them. James’s being the result of ticking the wrong box on a mortgage application, which was only discovered after a lackey was charged with searching through every file she has touched.

This is so disgraceful that even the most convinced opponents of liberal politics should be screaming their heads off in protest. There is no defence, let alone justification.

The US Justice Department is no more. It’s now the personal attack dog of an autocrat.

There surely has to be a nomination for some comedy prize that this post deserves.

Oh the irony is so Delicious it almost tastes of cake.

The issue here is who we are dealing with, and that they simply cannot be trusted, so very comprehensive verification techniques are going to be required at State level. So long as these are done though and the responsibility continues to rest with State appointed independent auditors it ought to be ok.

There are none so blind as those who refuse to see!

Anyone who cannot see the difference between what happened to Trump and what he is doing to his opponents is a lost cause.

Again I turn to Grok, whose answer is too long to be posted in full. You can find it yourself if necessary. These are selections :-

“Donald Trump faced four major criminal indictments in 2023, making him the first former U.S. president to be charged with felonies. These stemmed from actions related to hush-money payments, mishandling classified documents, efforts to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia, and federal election interference tied to January 6. By October 2025, outcomes vary: He was convicted on 34 felony counts in the New York hush-money case (sentenced to probation, no prison); federal cases were dismissed post-reelection due to DOJ policy against prosecuting sitting presidents; the Georgia case remains stalled amid appeals and immunity challenges; and the New York civil fraud case (led by AG Letitia James) resulted in a $454 million penalty, currently under appeal.

The question of whether these were “prosecuted for political purposes” is highly debated, with no unanimous consensus. Trump’s defenders, including Republican lawmakers and allies, argue the cases were “lawfare” orchestrated by Democrats to hobble his 2024 campaign. Critics and legal experts counter that the prosecutions were evidence-driven, independent, and necessary to uphold the rule of law—no one is above it.

No Definitive “Proof” of Politics Over Evidence: While timing and affiliations raise eyebrows, courts prioritized facts—e.g., grand jury approvals and witness corroboration—over motive claims. Legal experts like Elie Honig (CNN) called New York “selective” but not baseless, given Trump’s fraud history. Brookings framed it as a democracy dilemma: Prosecute to deter, but risk perceptions of weaponization.

• Broader Implications: Trump’s reelection flipped the script, with new DOJ probes into critics (e.g., Comey, James) drawing “vindictive prosecution” accusations—mirroring prior claims against him. This erodes norms, per NYT: “Politics and justice… tightly entwined.” Polls show lasting damage to public trust, with 48% believing Trump committed crimes in New York vs. 28% disagreeing.”
