This has been flagged up as likely for some time. It is self evident that Trump is targeting all who criticise him, along with the public servants who did their jobs in investigating and prosecuting him. This is the behaviour of a dictator and not that of a President in a system which relies upon the separation of powers.James Comey former head of the FBI is indicted on 2 charges.
The BBC is at great pains to point out that Trump went after him and the prosecutor is a Trump ally.
As I and others have repeatedly said on this thread the US justice system is open to political manipulation. The Democrats took at an injunction against Trump's Mexican border policy in Hawaii instead of Arizona, this is know as judge shopping.
No doubt this case was raised in Virginia because Trump believes this is his best chance.
You can indict a ham sandwich, what matters is the actual trial. If he is guilty then he deserves to be punished they are serious charges.
A prosecutor doesn't have to use a grand jury to indict someone, however the defence would likely request a judge dismiss the charges due to lack of evidence. So the prosecutor then runs the risk of coming up against an unfriendly judge and falling at the first hurdle.
It would be far harder for a judge to dismiss an indictment from a Grand Jury as it undermines the process, even if the judge is sceptical.
Comey has been a target for years. The statute of limitations was about to run out on these allegations but the lawyer charged with handling them could not find enough evidence to bring a case. So Trump fired him and replaced him with another of his personal lawyers. If this isn’t political interference in the legal process then I don’t know what could be! The new guy has done what his boss asked him to do.
I heard Michael Wolff, someone who knows Trump very well, on this the other day. He is outspokenly critical of Trump so may yet be a target himself. He suggested that this is going to put Pam Bondi in a bind because by acquiescing to Trump’s demands puts her, and all of those in similar positions, in great jeopardy from actions by a future administration. Greater jeopardy, in Wolff’s opinion than anything faced by Comey. His view being she must make decisions on whether to resist Trump and get fired herself, but stay out of jail, or cooperate, make herself very rich with the payoffs and hope he pardons her in time.
Looks like, at least for now, we know which path she has chosen.
