US Politics

Says the guy who criticises what he labels as populism. So anything his progressive groups don’t believe in.
Populism involves promising to give people what they want, and not delivering what they need.

It has no relationship of any kind to the principle of allowing free expression under the law and encouraging acceptance and tolerance of others.

No. He meant exactly what he said. That they will only take forward serious cases. Not that other cases aren’t valid. When you lack resources you must prioritise. The police do it all the time, which then causes angst because what they, you and I regard as serious often varies. Hence them seeking clarification.
If the only reason they're not arresting more than a thousand people a month is because of a lack of resources then we're in a sorry state.

She was right, and it was.

Not though for simply holding and expressing opinions. There’s nothing wrong in that.

It was suspended, after repeated warnings, for spreading misinformation, dangerous lies and incitement.

It was done by a private business, who have the absolute right to control content on their platform. Other platforms remained available. Trump’s right to free speech was not affected. Nor has Kimmel’s been. He could, and probably will, soon find a voice elsewhere.

That’s not the issue. This isn’t a private business deciding who can use their platform. This is the Trump administration pressuring broadcasters not to broadcast content unfavourable to them.

It’s authoritarianism.

Getting effective control of the spread of dangerous misinformation on the internet is an absolute imperative and must become a priority.

Not though for the police. It requires a totally separate organisation under Ofcom, with teeth, to bring platforms to heel, or face closure.

Misinformation is a subjective concept. When the government were exaggerating the effects of Covid they were applauded for acting in the common good even though a lot of what they claimed wasn't true.

Glad you said this. Don't you think that the majority oppose trans in the wrong bathroom, hormones for children, constant marches waving Palestine flags, arrests for hurty words, DEI hiring etc etc

The majority.....
No. I think the majority opposes any lack of fairness. So if recognising that transgenderism causes potential problems of trust then that we need to react by providing facilities that all can trust. They exist. Just not everywhere yet. I think the majority trust the NHS to make educated decisions about the provision of hormone treatments to those who require them.

I think the majority have sympathy for the plight of the Palestinians and whilst most don’t march in support they understand those who do. The majority understand that no one gets arrested for “hurty words” and that this, alongside similar slurs, are just the excuses of the right to try to justify unacceptable behaviour. The majority, as they approve of fairness, understand moves to ensure that those previously excluded from job opportunities are given better opportunities and that complaints about “DEI hiring” are just another right prejudice.

It’s the right who are out of line. Not the majority.

It is, which is why governments are the ones to make determinations and give guidance. Not me, nor you, or any particular group.

If the government did exaggerate the effects of Covid, and that’s an emotional way of describing a lack of knowledge or certainty at the time, then they did so for the very best of reasons. Ensuring national compliance is essential in any situation where the outcomes are unknown but potentially catastrophic.

You're now advocating autocratic fascism against anyone who speaks out against a narrative.

What a surprise......and a culmination of a week of trolling
Misrepresentations seem to be an endemic problem of the right.

I am not recommending anything of the sort. Cyber space is a relatively new area. We haven’t yet fully recognised its need to be regulated in the same way as traditional spaces. Things accepted by everyone as unlawful in traditional spaces go unchecked in cyber space.

That has to change.

I want to return to the Jimmy Kimmel suspension because it is a prime example of a huge and very serious problem in the USA. Trump said a couple of months ago, following the cancellation of another late night show that criticised him as a result of threats and pressure from his administration, that “Kimmel would be next”.

They were just waiting for the excuse. Even Ted Cruz has accused them of acting like the Mafia:-

What did Kimmel actually say that was so offensive? This seems to be the phrase that has got the right exited.

He said the "MAGA gang" was "desperately trying to characterise this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it".

Which they have taken to mean he is suggesting that the accused man is a MAGA supporter.

I don’t think that’s true. I think he inferred exactly what I have been trying to get over in the recent days. That the “MAGA gang” have been so obsessed with trying to blame the left and, in some cases Mossad, they have failed to look at their own responsibility for maintaining, widening and deepening the divisions and hatred.

One of “them” not meaning the kid is MAGA but that he also is on the extremes. Just as they are.

It could have been put better, that’s true, but I think the outrage comes from a misunderstanding that has then been used by the Trump appointed regulator to do what Cruz describes as Mafia like behaviour.

I have said many times that Trump thinks and acts like a mob boss. Demanding personal loyalty, firing anyone who criticises, threatening law makers with losing their jobs if they fail to support him and prosecutors if they accept briefs to investigate him. Defund Universities who teach things he disapproves of. Sacks employees who argue things are unconstitutional. Admiring the power of dictators.

One man rule is dictatorship. Congress needs to grow some before they lose them completely.

So much for "I am done with further comment on the Charlie Kirk murder." !

I am still struggling to understand the concept of "good" lies and misinformation, which are for everyone's good.
And "bad" lies and misinformation, which should be censored. 🙂

What people need is subjective just as what people want, and governments certainly have not been giving people what they need anyway. Therefore, crock of as usual.

What did Graham Linehan say that was so offensive he got arrested by armed policemen?

No more emotive than Matt Hancock's stated intention to "scare the pants off everybody".
When the government implement the reciprocal arrangement with America that criticism of the incumbent head of state is illegal a few can expect a knock on the door.
