Poor Sage. If he turned up and said he was 'Sarf London through and through, rude boy' or started dishing out faux-inspirational quotes about there being no mountain higher than a man's heart and no valley deeper than his bollocks, or whatever, we'd all just say 'Hmm. He seems to be a wanker'!

Personally I think that a typical modern 'manager' has so little control over key decisions like signing, sales, contracts, and behind the scenes club arrangements that they can only be assessed on what level of performance and results they get out the squad they have, rather than how those performances and results compare to those achieved previously at the club, or at other clubs of a similar size.

A bad coach/manager can sink the ship, but even a very good one is only going to be able to get the best out of the squad he has.

The squad Sage has to work with is not yet finalized, and will not be until the window closes. It may well change in a notable way in the final hours. It often does. The nature of modern football is such that we simply have to accept that.

Whatever happens though, Sage will not have a squad remotely as good as the one Glasner inherited.

I know he’s moved to another country and he’s speaking his second language, but he doesn’t exactly come across as mr personality. I’ve always thought teams take on the personality of their manager if they’re around long enough, in this case I hope not otherwise it’s going to be a pretty dour season 🤣

It amazed me that two great players in Trevor Francis and Peter Taylor were such boring managers, especially Taylor, he had a great personality as a player, hilarious Norman wisdom impressions

Footballers aren't really renowned for their personalities, wit and charm. You get the odd one but it's rare enough. Then all managers tend to be ex players. Well not all, but 99.9%.

Wholehartedly agree. Squad currently nowhere near as strong as Glasner had at first. My worry is that his squad can't be finalised until the end of August and how many matches is that already? 4? Maybe other clubs will also be hamstrung with the after effects of the WC. I'm not convinced it'll be a good idea to give others a 4 match start albeit we gave double that two years ago!

The squad is pretty rubbish frankly. We've lost players and we've got players whose standard is dropping off. We also are none the wiser about Wharton, Sarr and Matter.
We simply cannot afford to lose them currently. We clearly will not identify suitable replacements.
We probably won't even get decent fees frankly. Consider the debacle of Guehi for even one moment.

I think SP is one of those who likes to leave his Christmas shopping until Christmas Eve, in the hope that we can get a few bargains.

Not sure what it does for the morale of the players, certainly not much for the fans, when you see players leave, others being heavily linked with moving and very little on players coming in.

I'd love for us to have a squad ready from the beginning of the season, rather than treating the first few games as unimportant, but have given up on that happening.

So far things have worked out okay under this way. There has become little point in hoping for transfers in, other than out of contracts, until the last week of the transfer window,

I think there is a psychological effect whereby people are aware of their weak areas, and then massively over-compensate to cover them.

E.g: Flair players/characters become aware that their weak spot is defensive discipline. So as a manager, they completely over-focus on it.

I know it went south for Viera but people forget how important he was in changing our style to one where we could actually hold the ball and build from the back. The signings of Guehi and Andersen completely changed the way we played and set the foundations for a lot of the success that has followed.

It’s not what he says, it’s how he comes across, and it’s hard to see him being that engaging with the players, or maybe he’s just not good in front of a camera and mic……..but like you say, we’ll see what happens on the pitch

There was potential in the squad that OG inherited, it hadn't performed under Hodgson but Glasner made it real - so much so that Parish was able to cash in...
We can but hope that Sage can lift those players that have yet to attain the levels that they may be capable of.
