Tottenham vs. Crystal Palace match thread

When we won the Europa Conference we should be strenghtening the squad we had then for the Europa League but we didn't. Instead we did the opposite, sold our good players and brought in lesser quality inexperienced replacements.
All true but what do we do from where we are. We can’t go back in time and change things. We can only go forwards. So the question is whether Sage is the right person to do that. All the evidence so far is that he isn’t.

Brighton Brentford and Bournemouth all sold their best players and are thriving to various degrees.

Our squad as a whole is way better than it was a year ago.

The problem is how the squad is being utilised.

The window of opportunity opened very briefly for the club - Glasner remarked upon it, actually his first statement of dissatisfaction and a key to understanding what followed.
All this illustrates what happens when a "lesser" club has the cheek to win something but doesn't have the high finances to take the next step on the ladder - it's assets will be stripped away by the sharks waiting.
Some clubs have money and the "name" and spend lavishly to no great effect - Manchester United and Spurs spring to mind. Others successfully manage to sell assets and yet remain competitive - Brighton, Brentford and Bournemouth fall into this category.
Ultimately Parish & Co made poor choices in player recruitment, and in Pierre Sage's case, the wrong man at the wrong time.

Typical football fans really, Parish who runs our whole club is as good as our last few first team results on the pitch apparently, people sit in their seats or at home watching on TV all nice and cosy for 90 minutes doing fcuk all apart from paying for a game or a Sky subscription and they think they’ve got the right to demand the man who has the 24 hour 365 days a year stress of actually running the club leaves because of a bad run of results, unbelievable really
Fortunately reading these messages there are still several sensible people around and not all shooting from the hip saying I told you so

Trying to look at this objectively, but I am struggling. Sage comes out after the game and says nothing!

Glasner comes out of his game and shows passion and fight!

Sage does not know his players, he keeps changing and tinkering and cannot stick with players. He has clearly lost the support of Sarr, he has clearly lost the support of Mateta (who is an f'ing idiot). It seems like Mateta wanted to get sent off (like Martinez for MU).

We have bought players who will not move the dial. I like Khalili, but Mingueza has been kept off the pitch (did anyone see his stats in La Liga!!!!) - why???

I am looking at fixtures for games we could win - and I am struggling!

Writing on the wall - Lincoln City away next year if we keep Sage!

Recruitment - jury out.

Sage - regrettably right.

In conversation with some supporters they believe that Dyche is the right man at the present time.
Had he been appointed in the summer, Steve Parish would have been vilified !

I thought Sage was honest in his post match interview and accepted his responsibility for the team. Glasner blamed the players for not doing what he asked and implied some were not supporting his style of play. He clearly fears the fat Greek might sack him and his “mea non culpa” interview was given with that in mind.

He chops and changes as it is a squad system. No point having a deeper squad if you don't use it. And a serious issue with modern top level football is thrashing the assets in too many games.

Trouble is Sage is not doing the job as effectively as other managers.

I recall may moons ago the Head of Admin mentioning to me that the partners in the firm take all the risks, it is their money and reputation at stake. A reasonable comment I thought. As for Steve Parish the same applies I think. Parish is in the position to make the correct call, particularly essential now.

Frank more likely.

I suspect he would have come in the summer but was lined up for another job that fell through.

Yes, it depends on which way the fickle wind is blowing... Sage appeared to be a progressive appointment, but he never had the tools to do the job - a team without a spine, no leaders, no warriors, and a raft of cheapo recruits, loans, frees and sick notes replacing players that had won us trophies and since departed. The poor fellow never stood a chance.

That window that Glasner talked about was pretty badly compromised by his refusal to sign a new contract.

He was happy to demand we didn’t sell Guehi and make comments about our window but he was never prepared to put his own skin in the game, despite the club having backed him and offering him an extension in March even before we were in the semi finals

That absolutely had an impact on recruitment and dealings that summer.

Exactly they should be shouting not the fans . Which goes back to defenders not doing there job . Which is what I have been saying . Do you understand now .
And it’s not week in week out its year in year out . We only remember the defenders good things from the past not the mistakes . And there is loads
No you don’t understand. They are drilled to defend in a certain way on set pieces and every time they are not adapting to the circumstances. The players are doing what they being told and that is the issue. We set up to defend set pieces the same way every game. The defence coach comes out of the dug out and makes sure they are all in their positions- you don’t see that on TV.

I'm not disputing what you suggest; my overriding feeling is that Glasner played Parish like a fiddle. Btw, back then I thought Glasner should have been sacked, but for whatever reason Parish thought otherwise.

A significant factor has been the unavailability of Mateta and Sarr who scored nearly 40 goals between them last season.
Henderson, Mitchell, Richards, Canvot, Wharton, Kamada, Pino, Lerma, Hughes, Nketiah etc etc were all at the club last year when we enjoyed such success.
Lacroix who offered pace has gone as has Munoz but the latter was not the player of old after his injury. Unfortunately both Khalaili and Mingueza who play in Munoz's position have not been impressive.

Absolutely. It is very clearly the zonal marking system that is causing the problems. One of the issues with Sage is it clearly looks like the players are being asked to do things they know don’t work. Problem is if one of them doesn’t follow the instructions of the coaching staff he will get dropped.

Thank you 🙏…. And I’ve not heard anyone say any different to this at the matches.
