Fair enough, but presumably it was only called Battle after the Battle. Have no idea if it were called anything before. Don't think there was much there. The Norman landings along the Saxon southern coastline in 1066, were intercepted by the Saxon's mostly around a small Sussex town called Battle. The Normans vanquished the Saxon army in conflict, but to avoid confusion by calling it The Battle of Battle, it was hence named The Battle of Hastings.
Hope that clears up any confusion. 😀

The place was always called Battle, but the fight itself lacked a name until it progressed into the local area. Prior to that it was called "The of Hastings" and rumour has it the whole thing actually erupted because of two warring sets of grammar pedants.Fair enough, but presumably it was only called Battle after the Battle. Indeed the whole reason the word "battle" exists. As humans had never fought before England started fighting France. The place was always called Battle, but the fight itself lacked a name until it progressed into the local area. Prior to that it was called "The of Hastings" and rumour has it the whole thing actually erupted because of two warring sets of grammar pedants.
