Student society bans Reform UK for 'racism, transphobia and homophobia'

Farage said more than enough as a 17 y.o. schoolboy.
hurty words, wrong.

hurty actions ? do you accept that the link below is a thousand times worse and that there is no violent Far Right racking up statistics for murders, rapes, and other terror ? just a fake ghostly vague threat of something abstract in the future ? Prove me wrong....upload some links.

Are you seriously trying to compare the actions, however awful, of a homeless man with mental health issues with someone who seeks to become the PM of the UK?

This can't be done in reverse and that's what people need to see. I can't ban Bangor Student's Union members for being openly prejudice against groups of people. Grounds for discrimination and equality legislation from the UN, the EU and the UK state that you cannot discriminate against people for political beliefs. If I were in that university, I would take exactly that case - and win. I'm not Enoch Burke but this is bullshit and needs to be called out. The Guardian and The BBC should be on this like a flash. Any idea why they're not?

its the same as with Brexit. Lefties never respect democracy or the democratic wishes attested by voters.

Everyone, whatever their personal political position, with any respect for our democracy, understand that the wishes of voters are expressed solely at General Elections when they choose who will represent them until the next one.

I think you are confusing discrimination with the right to decide. If the Student Union held an open event which then barred some people because of their political views they would be guilty of discrimination.

Deciding not to invite a speaker is their choice. It’s their right to decide who they invite. Not the speaker’s to insist on receiving an invite.

It’s no different to us being able to decide who we invite through our front door. Only a limited number have a right of entry for very specific reasons.

The University could refuse the use of their premises to the Union unless they agree to host a certain group, but that’s different. The Union can refuse and go off campus. Their decision.

Isn't this the definition of wanting to live in one of those dreaded echo chambers?

Sure. Why would students conceivably want to hear any opinions which conflict with their own?
Many do. I would encourage them to and ask as many challenging questions as they can.

Knowing how best to counter opinions you find disagreeable is always valuable. It’s a lot more productive than abuse. Something a few here could benefit from understanding.

In the interests of free speech though it’s still their choice. If speech is free then so must be the right not to listen.

Yes but the right not to listen is easily exercised. Just don't attend.

Know your enemy.
If you perceived Reform as a political adversary, wouldn't it be best to know what they're about, and interrogate them openly ?

Sadly, these sort of events, if they were to proceed, are normally used to initiate a publicity stunt by heckling and disrupting any sort of reasoned debate.
Bangor Uni' has rather shown itself to be full of Mass Debators, unwilling to enter any intellectual discussions. Ignorants
