Strasbourg vs. Crystal Palace match thread

I can see the point you are making.

Nonetheless, Glasner has specifically asked for a player like Sarr in January, in his words 'someone who can run in behind. '
I think most fans would endorse this view.

It also indicates that Glasner does not see either Esse or Uche fitting the bill (or JRS or Franca before them).

Will the board satisfy his request?
It may be advisable for the board to check with Glasner whether he'll select the player first!!
Parish's ears prick up. Traore from Fulham. fast, heaps of experience and Fulham probably happy to let him go for free on 30 Jan. Just hope Glasner down't know he has only scored 33 goals in 432 first-team appearances

The solution?
As Glasner said in his post match interview , ‘more goalscorers.’
The issue then becomes whether these can be found from the existing crop of players or from new players.

In my view it won’t be from the former.

For example Wharton is a great young talent but doesn’t have the attributes of a goalscorer.
Look at his effort towards the open goal yesterday.
Head up, the ball struck upwards as opposed to head down and knee over the ball as we were taught as youngsters when striking the ball towards goal.
Pino has the uncanny knack of finding the keeper rather than the back of the net when facing the keeper.
Row Z is in more danger than the opposing goal when Lerma shoots.
Hughes gets a nose bleed when in the opposing penalty area.
Kamada is the ‘nearly man’ always just missing the target.

They are all good players, but not goalscorers and their career records support this assessment.

Mateta and Sarr will chip in with a few goals and after that Munoz looks to be the most reasonable bet.
Nketiah doesn’t get enough game time to make a reasonable judgement.

We’ll be fine and are set to have a good season, but if we want to have a very good season we have to convert more chances.
Wharton`s was a strange one if he been in midfield passing to somebody further forward I doubt he would have over hit the pass. It was almost as if he lost concentration.

I dont think ive ever seen another player consistently beat his man and manage to be as ineffective as him.

Thought we unlucky. Another day those two open goals would have gone in and we'd be home and hosed. But overall it was not our best day and we missed Guehi in the second half.

And credit due to Strasbourg for their second half performance in which they really took the game to us. They could go very deep in the competition.

Credit also to their manager Liam Rosenior for what he must've said at half time to raise their performance levels. Saw his post match interview as well where he came across really well too. Although I want Glasner to stay long term we have to be realistic in that he may well get poached or just leave at the end of the season. Rosenior may be one to keep an eye on.

I think during the warm up before the game on Sunday the coach doing the shooting practice should put the goal keeper next to him and pass the ball to the shooter to see if they can hit / pass the ball into the empty net ;-)

If you spurn two open goals then I don't think luck comes into it. Once Strasbourg equalised I thought we would lose. Reminded me of the Everton defeat although it was a more even game at 0-0.

Pre game I would have taken a point.

Yep. We need more coaching on open goal and one on one scoring.

I was thinking that for the one on one training sessions an apparatus that has an open armed mannequin mounted on a motorised boom which rolls back and forth on a light gauge track would be most useful - this system is much used in the film industry, first notably by Stanley Kubrick in "The Shining". Palace's one on one finishing is a bit of a horror story, like the film, and so such a device could make the world of difference on the training ground.

you cant coach 1 on 1 your either good at it or not Eze wasnt that good , most prefer 1 touch and shot , give keepers more credit because most of the time they put the attacker under pressure , as for open goals they could take them shots another 50 times and score them all , lot of the time its reaction to the ball (split second) , tobe honest last person was Dougie he was good at 1 v 1
