Sir Gareth Southgate

If you ignore his vociferous support for the demonisation by the police and Murdoch press of the victims of Hillsborough, something he continued to argue and refused to recant even after the Panel's damning verdict against the police in 2012.
He did say that he was "economic with the truth".

He had his sincerely held views which of course were not universally shared. He never denied that the Police may have made mistakes.
A truly awful tragedy and my thoughts are with the families and friends of those who went to a football match and never returned.

Perhaps this time next year we will hear of 'Sir Stephen Parish' ! 😀

The most shameful honours list ever.

Thornbury and Kahn got a title as a consolation prize. They are both despicable.

Southgate is just another example of rewarding failure. We are good at that in this country.
He took a side that should have won two tournaments and screwed it up.

I think it sums up this government very well!

In 2026 it'll be sirs' Huw Edwards, Gary Lineker, Ed Milliband and Dame Rachel Reeves!!

Why?

Well Jimmy Saville was knighted a long, long time ago so if it's making a mockery of the New Year's Honours and Knighthoods that you lot are worried about then I'm afraid you're extremely late for that particular ship.

As for the OP's question I'm sure Stern John got one.
Sir Stern? No?

Indeed, I think Southgate can be accused of letting his politics affect what happened on the pitch as well....that penalty line up seemed suspect to me. Regardless, considering the players he had and the easier than most groups he had, I think he under performed and produced boring football to boot.
Ah, but he did turn the world's spotlight on the wearing of a waistcoat in a warm climate.......

"For services to the tailoring industry"

They were not sincerely held views but were designed to ape and thus endorse Murdochs profitable attack on the victims of that tragedy. Why? Quid pro quo for the deal struck between Thatcher and Murdoch. We support your government. You drop the MME enquiry into the buy out of the Times papers.

Nobody in their right minds - certainly not a highly intelligent public servant like Ingham - would believe for one moment that Liverpool fans p1ssed on corpses or picked the pockets of the dead or attacked brave coppers trying to rescue fans (rather than continue to kettle them in to die as the miles of tv film proved beyond any possible doubt).

Even if his views were actually sincere, that he continued to voice them after the matter was fully settled renders him one of our more embarrassing followers.

For services to football, Roy Hodgson is far more deserving of the accolade. As much as Southgate did reasonably well with England, to bestow this honour upon him this soon after retiring as England manager seems wrong to me.

As for Sadiq Khan, i'd be tempted to cut his head off with the sword.
We can but hope
