Shabby treatment of our Veterans.

A third of people living rough are veterans, the fault is the Armed Forces failing to give help when they leave ,they should be re- settled in civvy street properly NOT just dumped *keyboard sets fire*

Attempts to do a witch-hunt on the Soldiers of Bloody Sunday. It always struck me as trying to deflect blame from where it really lay.....at the hands of the Politicians who instructed the Army.

Throw working class Tommy under the Tank so that Lord Darnley of Darnley Hall need not cancel the Polo Practice.

Surely the spirit of the Good Friday Agreement was to forgive all, but not to forget. But to move on, without recriminations on all sides......especially the grunts in the trenches, aged 16.
By all means, the families of the victims are important. Their feelings are still raw, even after fifty years. But, Tommy with the gun....is a small cog in a bigger machine. And only following orders, doing what he was always trained to do. No more guilty of murder than the fellas standing in the Trenches at the Somme.

It was 'The Troubles'.....you either forgive everybody or you convict everybody. Two Tier will not wash. Shabby Treatment of Veterans.

Poor treatment of veterans, is unfortunately not a recent occurrence. Even in the 1980's it was known a significant percentage of homeless people were veterans, mostly impacted by mental trauma. And when Thatcher introduced Care in the Community in 1990, even more veterans with PTSD, were off-loaded to fend for themselves onto the streets.
This is why I have a particular issue with charities being the prime supporters of our veterans, when it quite clearly is something the Government should be doing.

I have a little experience of this. A past tenant of mine was an ex soldier, who had separated from his wife and ended up in one of my flats. He was obviously depressed, unwell and had no meaningful work. One day I got a call to say he had been found dead. He was only around 40. The Royal British Legion were said to have been supporting him. They arranged the funeral and were there with flags and uniforms but how much they did before that is unknown to me. People often go into the forces with the expectation they will learn a trade that will equip them for life after service but it seems not to be working.

Contrast that with another tenant of mine, about the same age, who killed someone whilst drugged out of his mind and served 15 years before being released on licence. He was trained in prison and completely rehabilitated. He was also supported and supervised by the Probation Service on release, living in a halfway house before being allowed to live independently.

He found a job and became a trusted, hard working employee who was also very popular with the neighbours because he was so helpful. Unfortunately though he also died, just a couple of weeks ago, apparently from a heart attack.

It does though seem as though we extend more thought on how we treat criminals after they are released into the community than we do our ex military.

Well at least one got what they deserved.

i vaguely remember a story. A ton of Roman soldiers were returning home after the Punic Wars. Turns out that the Senators had robbed all their farms. Does anybody have the link to the details ?

Shabby treatment of Veterans is as old as time. It led to the rise of Caesar back then, and Trump today.

Taormina is well worth a visit if you're interested in this period, the theatre and Caesars forebears were based in Sicily.

Yes the have a lot in common Caesar has a salad after him and Trump likes tossing a word salad.

both Caesar and Trump were swimming in debt before they made the big-time. Both were deeply unpopular in the Parliament yet they carried the common man on the Street. Both get the popularity of the rank-and-file in the Armed Forces.

We all saw the huge political fallout when Tommy Robinson did a photo opportunity with the British Army. Our Elites got a very nasty shock cos they were just not expecting it.

Shabby treatment of Veterans brought down the Roman Republic. Will it bring down our modern equivalent ?

Do you believe in rehabilitation and a determination to put the past behind you and do something useful for society?

Or do you only believe in retribution? The guy who was murdered was also an addict, with an alleged interest in under age boys. I suppose you think he deserved it.
Wow that is a win double and I may raise a glass to the good news.
You though being a bit of a hypocrite don’t seem to be showing the same amount of willing to put the past behind you; with to example just 2… TR and Trump
