Selhurst Host Chas and Dave?

Country
England
Last night Villa Park hosted Black Sabbath for their last ever gig and it got me thinking.

Back in the 90s I am sure I turned up to a Palace game at Selhurst to an un-billed Chas and Dave concert on the pitch. Now I know they have nothing to do with Palace, but did that really happen?

I would prefer the return of ‘on me shed son’ to watching Chas and Dave 🤣

I can’t remember it, but it sounds so palacey if it did happen 🤣
I just Googled it and this website said it was before the opening game of the 97/98 season against Bolton which sounds about right. My Dad could only afford to take me to one game a season and I definitely saw Bolton a few times.

I would have been 16 I think. My Dad always used to insist on taking his seat an hour before kick off (I still can't break that habit either) and I remember only a couple of hundred people had done the same. Walked through the walkway in the AW (where the away fans sit now) to rabbit, rabbit, rabbit rabbit rabbit being sung.

But it did take a Google search to reassure me it wasn't all just a wonderful dream!

I remember that game, wasn’t it when el tel came back and we had that all red adidas home kit?
Paul Warhurst was playing against his old team
Still don’t remember chaz and Dave though, but I was living in South Norwood at the time and we used to stroll out of the portmanor last minute and just make kick off so I would’ve missed it

I think they'd finished about half an hour before the kick off so if you'd had a beverage you might have mossed it.

Honestly couldn't tell you any other details of the game but a few years ago I cleared out about 300 football programmes (I watch non league football as well so only about 20-30 were Palace) and there was definitely one with Paul Warhurst on the front in that kit.

One of the programmes, near the end of the season celebrated the time that Status Quo performed at Selhurst!!

My parents (before I was born) lived next door to one of the original members of Quo near Crystal Palace park.

Depending on how old you are I think you are getting confused with the Status Quo "End of the Road Tour" in 1984. Status Quo played at Selhurst Park on the 14 July 1984 and were supported by a motley assortment of Chas & Dave, Dave Edmonds, Grand Slam, and Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul.

I was there to see Quo but do not remember the others very much as you could buy as much beer as you could carry in Sainsbury's and it became a massive p1ss up.

Little Steven was a black guy with blond hair, which was a bit of a surprise in those days! He was not very well received because of his singing rather than his colour and spent most of the act dodging 3 litre bottles of cider that had been refilled by the audience before lobbing them onto the stage.

By the time Status Quo came on they had to wash down the stage.

There is a great article on the CPFC website at The Weird & Wonderful of Selhurst: Status Quo & bicycle polo - News - Crystal Palace F.C. with one amazing photo that shows how trashed the ground was. a0fd6f13-07e8-484a-be0c-de6619787898.webp

The record of the gig shows Chas & Dave only played three songs:
  1. Ain't No Pleasing You
  2. Gertcha
  3. The Bollocks Song

Was that the one where a skydiver crashed into the Arthur Wait before kick off? Maybe I'm having a nutcase moment now. I was in Vegas the night that happewned at the Holyfield Vs Bowe fight. I'm sure it happened again at Palace?

Chaz died on 2018, but Dave is knocking around. Not sure how local they were. They sounded as cockney as Jamie Oliver or Dick van Dyke.
Status Quo were tagged as being from Forest Hill, but I think that's because they used to rehearse in the Territorial Army hall, almost opposite the Horniman museum

Definitely not, I was 3 years old. I have found the game I was thinking of, interestingly on this website!

1997

I was at that gig. I remember Grand Slam supporting, Little Steven vaguely, but have no recollection of the others. It was a long time ago and my memory isn't what it was.

Funny 'cause I've actually met Dave Edmonds.

I believe that the guy that filled in for Chas after his death was called Dave so technically they were Dave and Dave for a while (although didn't advertise as such)

Chas Hodges was born in North London but lived somewhere in Kent I think.
He used to be in Head Hands and Feet, along with Albert Lee.

They played on the pitch at white hart lane, in the eighties, about an our before kick off against us, we took the proverbial out of them, out singing them, as they left the pitch they both gave us the finger, which caused roars of hilarity in the Palace end

Can’t remember when, I would guess maybe 50 odd years ago a midweek evening game at Selhurst, may have been someone’s testimonial or some sort of exhibition game but Rod Stewart was definitely playing also think he scored.
