I sense a number of posters on here almost willing us to lose the next 2 league games in the hope that the board will sack Sage. If we get points from one or both of them then Sage will likely still be here after the International Break.

If we put in a performance like we did on Thursday, then, irrespective of the result in the next two games, I expect Sage to be given more time to get things to gel. At the end of the day, he's getting the team to play the kind of front-foot football Parish (and let's face it, most fans) are craving. As I see it, as long as we look to be sorting the defensive side of the game, Sage will be given time. It's far too early to be talking managerial win percentages and the like for games played this season.
I'm at risk of repeating earlier posts of mine, but the very best realistic aim imaginable for me is that Palace continue to hover around 12th place for years to come and have the odd cup run, but do it playing in good, entertaining games. In other words, winning and losing 3-2 most weeks instead of 1-0.

If Sage can do that after all these years of sitting through cautious tactics, then he will have achieved something almost as good as another trophy win to me. If he can't then I, like many others it seems, imagine we will not only opt for a different manager, but for a return to the safety blanket of the parked bus.

It's not just a question of whether we should change the manager, it's what the club looks for in a manager that's at stake.

For that reason more than any other I feel like I want it to work for Sage. I just don't think it will if I'm being honest. Not unless he adapts more, and soon.

If you watch just the highlights... the goals we are scoring are different gravy at times... which is great to see... if we had purchased proper replacements in defence... be amazing... as an earlier poster said, if we hover around 10th-12th playing this way, it will be damn exciting, but also you couldn't help but think - what if we clean defence up... but that's the price you pay.

We hit the post twice in the first half v Everton, you can’t get much closer than that.

We certainly could have scored in those games.

That's not the same, though, as having several unbelievable sitters that somehow got smashed at the goalkeeper or into the stand from a few yards out.

The chances we gave up against Boro, Poznan, and Forest, and the amount of luck we need not to be at least two goals behind were above and beyond the usual. That's the difference.

On Thursday night the commentators said a few times that we had allowed the most shots on our goal in the premier league.

All beiginning to gel at Spurs, which is very bad news for our game next week.

I watched them unravel Chelsea yesterday. They looked good. WE will do well to get a draw at their place next Saturday. It's the luck of the draw whether you play an opponent when they're on a good run or a bad run.

In the commentary they were talking about Spurs playing well and “looking forward” to having to play Palace next. Tells you something about where both clubs are at. Complete reversal of when we played them away last.

Agreed. Johnson is arguably our worst ever signing. £35m and did nothing. We’ve swapped him for a player worth half that at best. I know people talk about Pino’s quality etc but the reality is he has largely been ineffectual. His return in goals, assists and influencing games is poor.

JSL I am more sympathetic to. He’s not worth anything like £45m but we thought JPM was leaving for £30m and a net outlay of £15m would have been ok. As it turns out that didn’t happen and we have a problem. The other really bad one is Nketiah. Poor player at this level. A track record of mediocrity at very best. Doesn’t fit the system we had then or now and we shelled out £30m. Bonkers.

I also think Osario and Gozo were daft signings. A combined £40m+ for two players who aren’t going to play in a position we already had depth in. Why? Just a total waste of money and resources.
Agree about Johnson but Pino is our best attacking threat at the moment. He’s class. As for Osario and Gozo they are highly rated young players with lots of potential. We can’t afford to buy the finished article. When we’ve tried it’s failed.Think you’re way off the mark….

My issue with Osario and Gozo isn’t whether they have potential. It’s that we spent a combined £40m on players who aren’t going to play and in positions that the squad had depth in. If they were playing regularly or had been purchased to fill clear gaps in the squad I’d be ok with it. As it stands they are about 6th or 7th choice in their positions so aren’t even getting time as rotation options. Again it’s not about them as players but about the thinking behind the a signings. Again why did we buy them?

I agree we can’t afford to buy the finished article always. Neither can we afford to spend lots of money on players who sit on the bench or not even that. We aren’t Chelsea. We can’t stock pile players.

That money could have been used for a centre half or held on to for January.

On Pino I keep hearing people talk about his “class”. I’d much rather be hearing about how he helped us win games. Sarr is much less technically adept in theory but much more effective in practice. I do agree Pino has been better this season.

A lot of the time we buy players because they're available. Funnily enough, when ours aren't available it doesn't seem to bother anyone else.

Indeed. I get buying potential when it helps the squad. Canvot was all potential but we needed more depth at centre half. He has played and contributed. Going through a tough spell now but you could see the logic of buying him. I just don’t get the logic at all with Osario and Gozo. On Osario in particular it’s not like lots of clubs were interested or he was seen as a leading talent. Looked more like a panic buy to me. Crazily we were still trying to buy another number ten in Fofana on the final day of the window. If he was a target why didn’t we try and get him earlier? Just looked like a complete lack of strategy. End result we don’t have any reliable centre backs but do have at least 8 players for two number ten positions.

I presumed all of that was Sarr playing up.

I'm not aware that we have spent £40m on these two players. Gozo cost us c£11m and is clearly seen as one for the future and Osorio is with us on loan only (loan cost apparently £2m). As far as I'm aware he goes back to the Danes at the end of the loan unless we agree to buy him.

I thought Osorio was an obligation to buy at the end of the loan for €26m plus €4m in add ons and then with a €2m loan fee. When added to the £11m for Gozo that’s how I was getting to £40m or thereabouts. If Osorio is an option rather than an obligation that’s a lot better I agree all be it I still question using a squad place for it.
